Baker Hughes' latest rotary rig data, released July 19, showed 10 rigs added per week in North America.
The United States and Canada added 2 and 8 rigs, respectively, bringing the total number of rigs in North America to 783, including 586 in the United States and 197 in Canada.
Of the 586 rigs in the United States, 564 are onshore and 22 are offshore. 520 are horizontal drilling rigs, 48 are directional drilling rigs, and 18 are vertical drilling rigs.
This week the United States added three onshore rigs and decreased one offshore rig.
Among them, California added two rigs per week, New Mexico, Ohio and Utah each added one rig per week, while Louisiana lost two rigs per week and Oklahoma lost one rig per week.
Canada has a total of 197 rigs, including 130 oil rigs, 66 natural gas rigs and 1 other rig. Canada added three natural gas rigs, four oil rigs and one other rig this week.
J.P. Morgan analyzed that drilling activity in major tight oil basins has remained relatively stable over the past four weeks, and the increase in the total number of rigs has been mainly driven by natural gas drillers. It expects only one oil rig to be added in the second half of '24 in United States.
Baker Hughes has been publishing rotary rig numbers to the oil industry since 1944, and these data are important references for the drilling industry and its suppliers.
