Xiang Shengmo's works, mostly landscapes, are also the main aspects of his achievements. In his early years, he started by studying Wen Zhengming, but he soon jumped out of the limitations of Wen Zhengming's painting style and learned directly from the ancients. This is mainly due to his family's rich collection of famous paintings of the past dynasties, so that he can quickly change to the careful and rigorous use of the pen of the Song people, and also take the rhyme of the Yuan people. In addition to the rich family collection of his ancestors, he also benefited from his own experience in observing nature and traveling to sketch, so that his picture layout is wide open and closed, the artistic conception is clear and elegant, the structure is rigorous and full of changes, the brushwork is elegant, concise and elegant, the charm is elegant, very bookish, and has a high character and ideological connotation.
There are two things that are most commendable about his paintings, which are also unmatched by other painters of the time. The first is a strong political color, and he uses his paintings to reflect the suffering of the people, and to express his sympathy for the people and loyalty to the Ming Dynasty. After experiencing the changes of "Jiashen" and "Yiyou", after the Manchu Qing Dynasty entered the Central Plains, Xiang Shengmo no longer inscribed the chronology of the dynasty on the painting, only used the cadre branch, and stamped the seals such as "Jiangnan in the Yechen", "Liaoxi County People since the Southern Crossing of the Great Song Dynasty", "Jiahe Priest in the Emperor and Ming Dynasty", etc., to show his aspirations.
The second is the extremely rigorous painting style and realistic attitude. Xiang Shengmo is good at absorbing materials from life, his paintings are close to reality, accurate modeling, and serious, contrary to the sloppy and sloppy style of the time, and the pursuit of "easy brushwork and hasty" painting style.
Xiang Shengmo likes to paint tall arbor valves, especially like to paint pine trees, tree hooks, rubbing, dyeing fine, the trunk of the rugged, several can be caught through the history, there is a strong sense of concave and convex, and the light-receiving part left is quite specific and accumulated, and the general literati painting schematic painting method is very different, so there is the reputation of "the name of Xiang Song is full of the southeast" in the Ming Dynasty. The big trees he painted, with straight trunks, strong and majestic, and the anthropomorphic images are vivid and strong, with strong personality strength.
In the creation of flower and bird paintings, Xiang Shengmo also has his own distinctive characteristics, especially pay attention to modeling, careful composition, good at expressing the layers of flowers and leaves and petals, the light and shade of the back and the light-receiving point, so as to be different from the painting style of other flower and bird painters at that time. Xiang Shengmo seriously absorbed the cautious and strict spirit of the Huangqian School, but in terms of painting, he was influenced by freehand painting and formed a form of combining work and writing, which brewed a new trend of the Huangqian School's Gongbi flower and bird painting. In terms of technique, most of them use ink or a little light color, and sometimes they also use pure color as a boneless method, and the color is light but not thin. In the use of the pen, very dignified and elegant, so although there is a beautiful hue, but the rugged wind bones, the whole tone and atmosphere, very elegant and elegant, not ordinary, as if there is a cold and dark fragrance floating in the meantime. In addition to painting, Xiang Shengmo is also good at calligraphy and poetry. His calligraphy is dignified and rigorous, and he pulls out the middle without losing the bookish atmosphere. Most of his poems are pictorial poems, in addition to the landscape poems that depict the scenery of mountains and waters, natural beauty, there are also many to express his sympathy for the people's suffering and nostalgia for his homeland.
