On the evening of July 23, Beijing time, a breaking news: ESPN Woj reported that the Hornets officially bought out guard Reggie Jackson, and Reggie will join the Philadelphia 76ers after a clarification period (48 hours). Reggie is at this age and just wants to play for a championship team. He and George have been teammates since the Clippers, and now Philadelphia is teaming up again.
Reggie will be paid $5.25 million next season, and it's not known how much he gave up in a buyout. In contrast, Wei Shao gave up his $1.7 million salary when he reached a buyout with the Jazz, and his original $4 million contract only occupied $2.3 million of space for the Jazz. Why mention Wei Shao? Because he went to the Nuggets to replace Reggie's position.
Reggie has moved between three teams this summer: On June 25, he announced that he would exercise his $5.25 million player option for next season and intend to continue playing for the Nuggets. Three days later, on June 28, the Nuggets sent Reggie and three second-round picks to the Hornets in exchange for a trade exception. In order to clear Reggie's contract, the Nuggets would rather hitch a ride with a draft pick.
Another coincidence: As we all know, in the last two years, the Jazz have bought out Willis twice. In fact, Reggie is similar, and has been bought out by the Hornets twice in the past two years. On Feb. 10, 2023, the Clippers traded Reggie to the Hornets in exchange for Plumlee. On February 12, 2023, the Hornets bought Reggie, and then he joined the Nuggets.
Reggie was lucky, winning the championship with the team in his first season with the Nuggets. In the 2022-23 season, Reggie played 16 regular-season games for the Nuggets, two of which were starts. He averaged 7.9 points, 1.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 0.6 steals in 19.9 minutes per game. He shot 38.3 percent from the field and just 27.9 percent from three-point range.
In the summer of 2023, Bruce Brown and Jeff Green left the Nuggets, and Reggie signed a two-year, $10.25 million contract extension with the Nuggets. In the 2023-24 season, Reggie played in 82 regular season games, averaging 22.2 minutes per game, scoring 10.2 points, 1.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 0.5 steals and 1.3 turnovers, and shooting percentages from three: 43.1%, 35.9%, and 80.6%.
For comparison, in the 2023-24 season, Wei Shao played 68 regular-season games with the Clippers, 11 of which were starts. He averaged 22.5 minutes per game, which is about the same time as Reggie. Wei Shao averaged 11.1 points, 5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.1 steals and 2.1 turnovers per game, shooting 45.4%, 27.3% and 68.8% from three. A number of data are better than Reggie!
Reggie is gone, Wei Shao is here, and the strength of the Nuggets bench continues unabated. Finally, let's talk about Reggie's new club, the 76ers, who have more operations this summer, mainly with the following signings:
1. Signed George for 212 million in 4 years, renewed Maxey for 204 million in 2 and 5 years, and signed Caleb Martin for 40 million in 3 and 4 years; 4. 2 years and 16.3 million renewal of Oubre; 5. 2 years and 16 million renewal Kenyon Martin Jr.; 6. Sign Drummond for 10 million in 2 years; 7. A one-year contract with Reggie, Eric Gordon and Lowry.
The 76ers are expected to start next season: Maxey, Oubre, Caleb Martin, George, Embiid. Subs: Lowry, Gordon, Reggie, Johnson, Kenyon Martin Jr., McCain (rookie), etc. Do you think this squad depth can break out of the East?
