Madrid and Bonn, Germany, July 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- DHL Express announced plans to invest more than 40 million euros in the construction of a new aircraft maintenance hangar in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, to enhance Spain's position in the company's global network layout. The new facility, which is expected to be operational in mid-2027, will be DHL Express' second-largest repair center in Europe after the Leipzig hangar in Germany.

"We are delighted to invest in a new hangar in Victoria-Gastez. In anticipation of business growth, this new facility will provide a strong guarantee for our aircraft maintenance capabilities in the coming years. Jesús Sánchez, Senior Vice President of DHL Express Europe, said: "The facility will not only ease the pressure on Leipzig's hangar maintenance business, but will also provide employment opportunities for local skilled workers, especially aviation technicians." "

The hangar will initially employ around 50 people and will be responsible for the maintenance of the DHL B757 fleet or other aircraft types. In addition to the hangar, the facility will include office areas and storage areas for major components of the freighter, such as engines, auxiliary power units (APUs), landing gear, and thrust reversers.

The new facility will be located on the west side of DHL Express' Victoria Airport hub and will cover more than 19,700 square metres, including 6,600 square metres of hangars, 1,605 square metres of outdoor facilities and 11,500 square metres of apron (runway).

According to the DHL Group Sustainability Roadmap, the new hangar will be carbon neutral and will significantly reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the number of flights to non-DHL-owned maintenance facilities in Europe. In addition, the facility will provide shorter distance advantages for the overhaul and recovery of grounded cargo planes in the Iberian Peninsula.
