Benson said there had been a "massive" shooting, but could not say exactly how many shells were at the scene, noting that forensic personnel were still searching for new shells as of 9:30 a.m. today.

"There are a lot of them, and the number of shots is very high," Benson said.

"Forensics have not even examined and counted all the shell casings, and although it has been a few hours since the incident, they are still investigating."

Detective Benson said there is no information about the suspect and it is unclear whether the shooting was targeted. Authorities found a firearm at the scene, but declined to elaborate further.

In an interview with Toronto's 680News radio, a resident said she heard similar sounds of an altercation before gunfire rang out in Scarborough Square. One of the cars in the parking lot had bullet holes.

Officers are searching the area and searching for videos while urging the public to provide any information.
