In the recently held 2024 Shenzhen Youth Smart City Innovation Exchange Activity, the students of Shenzhen Nanshan Foreign Chinese School Senior High School achieved remarkable results and won the first place in the middle school thesis group.

It is reported that a total of 118 schools and 318 groups of works participated in this year's smart city innovation exchange activities, and a total of 11 special awards and 22 first prizes were selected after the qualification review of the review working group, the preliminary review of materials, the review of works and the review of the debate. Among them, all four papers from students from Nanwai High School won awards, including 1 outstanding work award and 3 first prizes.

A good project starts with life

The paper "Investigation and Research on the Construction of Smart Public Toilet Hand Cleaning Dual System" co-authored by Chen Yuhan, Xiang Yuxin, Chen Tianyu and Ren Xiaoyu won the Outstanding Work Award. Taking the campus public toilet as a breakthrough point, this study explored the correlation between different hand cleaning methods and the number and type of residual microflora on the hands, analyzed the experimental results, collected and synthesized relevant data, and proposed the construction of a smart public toilet with a dual system of ultraviolet paper towel disinfection and promotion of seven-step handwashing method. The project not only focused on the social issues of public toilet hygiene, but also proposed practical solutions, reflecting the students' deep understanding of smart city construction and public health.

Inspired by real life, Guo Kaiwen came up with the idea of establishing an urban flood disaster system. He used AI and big data technology to demonstrate the self-designed intelligent early warning system for urban flooding disasters in the article "Application of Information Technology in Intelligent Early Warning of Urban Flood Disasters". In the article "Investigation and Research on the Construction of Intelligent Alarm System for Fire Escapes", Lu Hongren designed a smart vehicle transfer service system combined with AI for vehicle management in view of the problem of fire passages being occupied in living quarters. Lin Yuxin was interested in baking, explored the main factors of image yeast fermentation, and designed a smart fermentation system, and finally formed a paper "Exploration of Factors of Yeast Fermentation and Construction of Smart Fermentation System". All three students won the first prize for their papers.

"One body, two wings" to educate talents

With the rapid development of the knowledge economy, science education has become the core force for cultivating innovative talents in the new era. It is not only about the accumulation of knowledge, but also about the enlightenment of thinking and the cultivation of innovation ability. Nanwai High School is deeply aware that in the wave of globalization and informatization, the importance of science education is becoming more and more prominent. It not only requires students to have solid scientific knowledge, but also requires them to have interdisciplinary thinking skills and innovative problem-solving skills.

In this regard, Nanwai Senior High School has clarified the definition of talent training of "one body, two wings", taking Liren education as the foundation, committed to the improvement of students' foreign language literacy and the training of science innovation ability, and cultivating global competent talents with Chinese roots for the future. In terms of cultivating the innovation ability of science, the school is committed to building a new talent training model based on science education and using project-based learning as a means to stimulate students' interest in scientific research and cultivate students' spirit of exploration and practical ability. To this end, the teaching and research department of Nanwai High School has set up a discipline competition coach team led by Zhang Guoming, a doctor from East China Normal University and a first-level coach of mathematics competition, and Liu Yupeng, a postdoctoral fellow in chemistry from Peking University, and composed of 13 coaches with academic backgrounds from Qingbei and first-class 985 universities in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, information, science and technology, and astronomy. At the same time, the school works closely with Tsinghua "01" College, Tsinghua Graduate School, Advanced Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences and other institutions of higher learning to provide diversified scientific and technological innovation experience for students who are interested in science learning, and cultivate students' innovative awareness, innovative thinking and innovation ability.

Project-based learning yields results

In this competition, three award-winning projects are all from the STEM club of Nanwai High School. The STEM Club of Nanwai High School adheres to the whole-process teaching path of "discovering problems, analyzing problems, and solving problems", stimulates students' innovative thinking and practical ability, and cultivates them to become the pillars of the future society. Since the establishment of the club 8 years ago, more than 45 projects have been approved by students, including 26 exploratory small projects in Shenzhen, and the members of the club have won many good results in municipal and district-level science and technology innovation competitions. From its establishment to maturity, the STEM Club has gradually improved its curriculum system, and compiled school-based textbooks such as "Middle School Students Learn to Do Scientific Research" and "Little Beagle". The students of the club will go through the various processes of project-based learning, such as "selecting a project, making a plan, exploring activities, creating works, displaying and exchanging achievements, and evaluating activities", from "asking questions" to "literature review", from "opening report" to "final defense", and every practice of the world is a sublimation of wisdom. Their results are not only a deep understanding of knowledge, but also a deep insight into problems.

Many science and technology innovation school-based curricula of Nanwai High School are also constantly exploring multiple science education models, practicing education reform in the new era, connecting inside and outside the school, and linking textbooks to life, so that students can find solutions to real social problems and combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills. Here, students not only learn knowledge, but also how to apply it. They find problems from the bits and pieces of life, cooperate in exploration through scientific methods, and finally come up with innovative solutions, which not only lays a solid foundation for their personal growth, but also reserves the power of youth for the progress of society.

They firmly believe that through this education model, the students will be able to surpass themselves in the exploration of future innovation and scientific research, and become innovative talents with a global vision and a sense of social responsibility.
