The Seine is heavily polluted, and the men's triathlon competition has been postponed

PARIS — Pollution of the Seine River forced Olympic organizers to postpone the men's triathlon on Tuesday, which could lead to the cancellation of a core event at the Paris Olympics. The massive $1.5 billion cleanup effort at the Paris Olympics is designed to allow athletes to compete on this notorious, filthy waterway that flows through the city center.

The Paris 2024 Triathlon and World Triathlon issued a statement saying that tests show that the water quality of the Seine is still below acceptable standards on race days. The men's competition has been postponed to Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. local time (4:45 a.m. Eastern United States time), followed by the women's competition scheduled for 8 a.m

The two triathlon events are still subject to water quality testing that meets World Triathlon's established swimming standards, with the emergency race day scheduled for Friday, August 2, also remaining unchanged, according to the World Triathlon statement.
