Indonesia viewed Africa as a significant market for electric vehicle batteries and is actively seeking collaboration with countries on the continent, said Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan on Monday.
During the International Battery Summit in Jakarta, Luhut said with a fast-growing population, Africa becomes a big market. "We are anxious to establish relationships with them, particularly Kenya and South Africa."
Luhut embarked on a mission to Africa and has been engaging with major stakeholders in the continent's electric vehicle industry.
The Indonesia-Africa Forum, set for September 2024, will include further discussions on collaborative initiatives in the electric vehicle sector.
Indonesia possesses 21 million tons, equivalent to 24 percent, of the world's nickel reserves, a crucial component for electric vehicle batteries. In 2023, the nation produced 1.8 million tons of nickel, accounting for half of the world's production.
