Zhang Xiaogang, spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense, answered reporters' questions on the passage of Canada's warship through the Taiwan Strait and hype
Reporter: According to reports, the Canada Navy's frigate USS Montreal sailed through the Taiwan Strait on 31 July. Canada's defense minister then reaffirmed Canada's commitment to a "free, open, and inclusive" Indo-Pacific. Do you have any comment?
Zhang Xiaogang: The Eastern Theater has responded to the incident of the Canada frigate "Montreal" passing through the Taiwan Strait and hyping up, and the Chinese side has lodged solemn representations with the Canadian side through military and diplomatic channels. The Canadian warship caused disturbance and stirred up trouble in the Taiwan Strait, sending a wrong signal to the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, and seriously endangering peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. It should be pointed out that the Canadian side has hyped up its erroneous behavior to make it "existential" and openly found excuses to mislead public opinion, which is even more wrong. The Taiwan issue is China's internal affair and brooks no foreign interference. We are telling the Canadian side that it should abide by the one-China principle, be cautious in its words and deeds on the Taiwan issue, and avoid affecting the development of relations between the two countries and the two militaries.
