With the rapid development of modern logistics, higher efficiency and lower emissions have become the persistent pursuit of major logistics enterprises. Under the traction of demand and regulations, European trucks have also ushered in a new round of upgrading. The 2024 IAA Motor Show is just around the corner. On the eve of this auto show, Germany MAN brought us a full range of 25 models, TGL, TGM, TGS, TGX, the four TG series trucks have ushered in the 2025 model (MY25, Model Year 25) update.
MAN Trucks' product line is fairly clear, divided into three large series depending on the tonnage. The TGL series models are mainly for light duty and TGM for medium duty conditions, while TGS and TGX are designed for heavy duty conditions, with the former focusing on engineering transportation and the latter being the flagship of the road. In today's article, let's take a look at the evolution of the 25 TGX models.
In 2020, MAN officially unveiled the new generation of the TG series trucks. With this change, MAN brings us a new generation of design language. Compared to its predecessor, the lower end of the front hood of the new TGX has been extended to blend in with the grille below, creating an inverted trapezoidal front hood geometry that is as powerful and muscular as a shield.
Compared to its predecessor, the new MAN TGX is much more refined in terms of exterior details. First of all, the grille is no longer a black hollow, but is made up of three-stage stacked grille trim, which enriches the details of the front face. At the same time, depending on the exterior package, the grille surface can be blackened or chrome-plated to take the look to the next level.
In addition, the body shape of the new MAN TGX is more complex. For example, the new bumper has a well-defined line, combined with the new LED headlights, which makes the whole vehicle even more brilliant. The door is designed with a deflector strip, which is connected to the front cover corner, which has the effect of reducing air resistance and keeping the door handle clean. Although this design language is from 4 years ago, it is quite interesting today.
The sun visor is designed above the front windshield. Unlike the straight visors on regular models, MAN has designed an inverted trapezoidal concave decoration for the TGX's visors, which are decorated with chrome strips, making the whole car more agile and detailed.
Depending on your needs, the 25 MAN TGX is available in three cab configurations. Among them, the GX-shaped cab has a high roof and long structure, which can carry two berths and provides abundant storage space. The GM cab has a lower roof height but still offers 1.85 metres of interior standing room. The GN cab, on the other hand, is designed for short to medium distances and features a flat-top sleeper structure with less storage space, but also a comfortable bed to rest in.
As MAN's official show car, the 25 TGX is naturally top-of-the-line. It features the largest GX-shaped cab for more interior space. Compared to its predecessor, the new TGX features a revised side window shape that is larger and more angular, helping to improve interior lighting and provide a better look, a feature that has been carried over to the 25 TGX.
In response to the new restrictions of the European Union's GSR General Safety Regulation, the 25 MAN TGX has added a number of sensors to the body, such as a millimeter-wave radar behind the front wheels, which corresponds to the front and rear perspectives. They can detect obstacles on the side of the vehicle and enhance the safety of the vehicle when changing lanes and cornering. Based on a variety of sensors such as radar and cameras, the 25 MAN TGX is equipped with a variety of active safety functions such as AEB automatic emergency braking, LDW lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, and ISA intelligent speed limiting, which greatly improves driving safety.
As a new feature, the OptiView electronic mirror system is also available on the 25 MAN TGX. Its primary mirror uses a dual-camera solution, corresponding to the backward telephoto angle of view and the downward view of the wide-angle view. On this basis, this electronic rearview mirror system also includes a downward vision blind mirror above the A-pillar of the passenger side, replacing the original ground mirror, further reducing the blind spot and enhancing driving safety.
The 25 TGX has a model size of 18.560, with 18 representing a GVW of 18 tonnes and a 560 representing an engine horsepower of 560 hp. In addition to the 25 TGX, MAN introduced the new PowerLion power chain, which replaced the previous D26 series with the new D30 series inline-six diesel engine at its core, and increased the maximum horsepower from 520 hp to 560 hp.
Like Scania, MAN is a member of the TRATON Group. Based on the Group's unified technical architecture, the new D30 engine is also the product of the CBE1 engine platform and can be seen as the heart of Scania's Super power chain: a reproduction of the DC 13 17X series. They are different from the turbine and other accessories, but they are basically the same in the engine body, all of which adopt an in-line six-cylinder structure, double overhead camshaft, integral cylinder head technology, and match the XPI ultra-high pressure fuel injection system to achieve higher fuel efficiency, which is a significant improvement compared to the previous generation D26 engine.
Judging by the nameplate, the new MAN D30 engine is capable of producing 560 hp, which is the same as that of the Scania DC 13 173 engine, which has a torque of 2,800 Nm. For reference, the Scania DC 13 17X range is available in four hp ranges of 560 hp, 500 hp, 460 hp and 420 hp, with torque of 2800 Nm, 2650 Nm, 2500 Nm and 2300 Nm respectively. The details of the all-new MAN D30 engine are still at an unknown stage and will be officially unveiled at this year's IAA Motor Show.
In addition to the D30 engine, the MAN PowerLion powertrain also includes a new 14-speed AMT transmission from the TipMatic series. According to public figures, the gearbox has 14 forward gears and "8 reverse gears", which is the same as Scania's new OptiCruise gearbox. The gearbox is also available with a new hydraulic retarder, with a maximum braking torque of 4,700 Nm, similar to the Scania R4700D hydraulic retarder.
The transmission's 14 forward gears include 12 regular gears, 1 crawl gear, and 1 overdrive. The 8 reverse gears are not physical gears, but the reverse gear set is eliminated, and the reverse gear function is realized through the planetary gear mechanism. These features result in a lighter gearbox, shorter length, and better adaptation to operating conditions. In addition, the gearbox also features low internal resistance technology and an overhead oil pan structure for longer oil change intervals and higher transmission efficiency.
Compared to the powertrain upgrades, the interior of the 25 TGX has not changed much. The multimedia cockpit brought by the new generation TG series models has been retained, and the new multi-function steering wheel, full LCD instrument cluster, touch multimedia screen and other configurations enhance the sense of sophistication in the car.
The multimedia screen can be intuitively interacted with by touch, and to the left of it is the installation position of the electronic parking brake
In addition to touch control, the MAN SmartSelect function can also be used to control the multimedia screen, which can be adjusted by knob and click, which can reduce distractions without sacrificing functionality. The wrist rest under the knob allows the driver to rest his wrist on it for more comfortable handling.
The steering column of the 25 MAN TGX has been upgraded with a wider angle that allows the disc to be adjusted to almost 90° to allow for more interior space when getting in and out of the car. Thanks to the wider adjustment range, drivers of all shapes can find a driving position that suits them.
The instrument panel is equipped with cup holders, storage drawers, 12V and 24V power ports, USB Type-C charging ports and other practical configurations
The large locker allows you to carry more items with the car, and the central locker is equipped with a roller shutter door, which is easier to open and avoids the risk of bumping. The sunroof is also available as a feature that helps to improve daylighting in the interior and thus reduce the feeling of oppression.
There are lockers and refrigerators under the sleepers
As for sleepers, the 25 TGX is equipped with the same equipment as its predecessor, with storage slots and other features, and integrated controls on the rear wall of the cab, allowing the driver to control the car's functions without getting out of bed. The GX cab can be equipped with double sleepers up and down, so as to meet the needs of working conditions such as two drivers.
Modern logistics demands more and more efficiency. With efficiency in mind, MAN has launched a full range of 25 models. Among them, the TGX and TGS can be equipped with the latest PowerLion power chain, thanks to the new engine and transmission, the vehicle will inevitably achieve better fuel consumption performance, and further evolve in transportation efficiency. More information on them will be unveiled at the 2024 IAA Auto Show shortly after, so let's look forward to it! Thank you for reading this article!
