Wu Rongting was born in a merchant family in Jiaxing, his grandfather Wu Lanpu ran a soju business, and his father Wu Jianhan was also a businessman and a writer, who liked calligraphy and painting and had a collection.
Since childhood, he has been influenced by Jin Rongjing and other predecessors, and is fond of Kunqu opera and calligraphy and painting. In 1928, he studied with the painter Guo Jiren and learned to paint flowers. Later, he was guided by Mr. Jin Rongjing, Liu Shan, Chen Yuru, Xu Hongbin, Zhu Dake and Wang Mai Changzhu. In 1930, he joined the Li Jinshi Painting and Calligraphy Society and self-printed the "Little Blunt Nunnery Tibetan Seal".
