A few days ago, a pot of purple-red chrysanthemums bloomed in a chrysanthemum garden in Wuhan. One of them naturally mutated and became a bicolor chrysanthemum.

On October 15, the reporter saw in the chrysanthemum garden of Baiquan base of Wuhan Seedling Industry Co., Ltd. that this pot of purple-red chrysanthemums entered the full flowering period and bloomed hundreds of small chrysanthemums. One of the chrysanthemums at the top is particularly eye-catching, this chrysanthemum is half purplish red and half white.

Li Jiang, the person in charge of the chrysanthemum garden who planted the pot, said that the name of the chrysanthemum variety was "Zixia", and it only bloomed a few days ago. She was surprised to see this naturally mutated two-color chrysanthemum, because the chance of mutation was only about 1 in 10,000, which can be said to be rare but not sought.

Li Jiang has been planting chrysanthemums in the chrysanthemum garden for four consecutive years, and every year he has to plant some "Zixia", and this year he planted 30,000 pots. In the past four years, "Zixia" has undergone natural mutation for the first time. However, other varieties of chrysanthemums in the chrysanthemum garden occasionally mutate into two-color chrysanthemums.
She said that next year, she will try to cross-breed this variety with the same kind of ball chrysanthemum to see if there is a possibility of producing more flower colors. If a variant trait is produced and the trait is stable after the trial, it means that a new chrysanthemum variety may be born.
There are 1,200 varieties of chrysanthemums and more than 50,000 plants in the chrysanthemum garden of Baiquan base this year, many of which will be unveiled at the Golden Autumn Chrysanthemum Exhibition held by the Municipal Garden and Forestry Bureau in Zhongshan Park in November this year.
