According to the report, "Trevor" is a local "celebrity" in Niue, it is neither an endemic species of Niue Island nor a local native species, it is a mallard duck. After a storm in January 2018, it popped up in Niue, which was said to have never been inhabited by ducks.

Niue is a small island nation with a population of only a thousand people. The country is 480 km west of Tonga, 560 km northwest of Samoa and 2,400 km north of New Zealand in the southwest, and the ducks are unlikely to arrive on their own. It is believed that Trevor was blown there by a storm.

In Niue, Trevor lives in a large watering hole and, while considered "the loneliest duck in the world," has many friends. Locals and even the island's fire brigade often inspect its puddles, and if the water level is too low, people fill it up. In addition, several roosters and wild birds will also go to the watering hole to accompany it.

In 2018, when a New Zealand media reporter visited Niue, he found that local residents used the watering hole where Trevor lived as a signpost. The reporter immediately wrote an article about it, and "Trevor" became famous overnight.
