Domestic large shovel armor with bright colors explains in detail the five major forked shovels in China

Foreword: Previously we have talked about the staghorn shovel with golden armor on the head of the antlers, and there is a species similar to the antler spade in the entire spade genus, which can be regarded as a close relative species, the male insect large individual can easily break 100mm length, the entire genus has exaggerated jaws and bifurcated features, I believe that insect friends already know which genus of spade armor, right! It is the genus Prankhorn.

Overview of the genus Charioteer

Chinese scientific name: The official domestic scientific name is also known as the six sections of the genus, the genus name "Hexarthrius" is the meaning of the six sections, "Hexa" in Latin is "6", and "arthr" is the meaning of the joint, which together is the meaning of the six sections.

Main features: The antennal gills of this genus spade are usually 6 segments, which is a major feature that is completely different from other spade nails, and the six-section name is derived from this.

Species distribution: According to the existing classification, there are fourteen species known, the most famous of which is the giant jaw forked shovel, which can be more than 110mm in length, and the temperament is fierce, which can be described as a major monster in the shovel armor. Fork horn spade nails are mainly distributed in Southeast Asia, china is also distributed, there are 5 species recorded, of which 4 are basically at the edge of the distribution area, the overall number is not much.

Chinese forked shovel (six-section shovel)

Today we will first introduce the domestic forked shovel in detail, and then we will talk about the varieties in Southeast Asia; the following introductions use the official Chinese scientific name.

Hexarthrius aduncus:

China's territory is mainly distributed in the southeast region of Tibet (Metuo), its appearance is more similar to the species of saw shovel (fork horn genus and saw spade genus are also close edges), the head shield is shaped like a mountain type, the middle protrusion, the forethia edge is weakly serrated, and the end of the antennae has 6 cheek segments protruding obviously, which is easy to distinguish; adult insects have phototropism.

Note: The Japanese side has designated the Indian six sections recorded in the "Chinese Spade Armor 2" as an unnamed subspecies, and the Indian six sections have two subspecies before them: Hexarthrius aduncus aduncus (Jordan, 1894) and Hexarthrius aduncus igarashiae (Fujita, 2010), except for the southeast region of Tibet in China, these two subspecies are distributed in India and northern Myanmar.

Hexarthrius parryi:

Also known as Parry forked shovel or macular six-section shovel, the distribution area is extensive, Southeast Asian countries basically have distribution, China is mainly distributed in Yunnan Xishuangbanna area. It can be regarded as a representative variety of the genus Six, with a large jaw and forked horn form of a huge coarse mine, and at the same time with a fierce personality, giving people a feeling of mighty and domineering. In addition to the large jaw, the color of its elytra black + orange markings is also a prominent feature, and the name of the orange dorsal horn is also derived from this.

There are four main subspecies of orange dorsal horn, in addition to the original subspecies there are the following three subspecies:

Hexarthrius parryi deyrollei (Parry, 1864): distributed in northern Thailand and southeastern Myanmar;

Hexarthrius parryi elongatus (Jordan, 1894): distributed on the island of Borneo;

Hexarthrius parryi paradoxus (Mollenkamp, 1898): The main distribution area is Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula.

Hexarthrius melchioritis:

Also known as burgundy fork horn, it is mainly distributed in northern Myanmar and Yunnan (Ruili) in China, which is very similar to hexarthrius mniszechi ( hexarthrius mniszechi) living in India. The main medial teeth of the large male jaw are farther away from the end and there is no downward spike at the base, and the anterior angle of the dorsal plate of the small individual male is farther away from the side of the head, and the inner teeth of the large jaw end are shorter.

There are four main subspecies in China, namely the designated subspecies of Yunnan (and northern Vietnam), the northern Guibei subspecies of Guangxi (Dayao Mountain, Mao'ershan), the Guangxi west (Baise, Longzhou) species of Guangxi, and the Gaoligongshan subspecies of Yunnan (Tengchong and Gongshan).

According to the data of "Chinese Spade Nail 2", the male can reach 89 mm in length. The whole of this kind can be said to be huge and colorful, worthy of beautiful 2 words!

Note: According to the Classification of the Japanese, the Six Sections of the Buddha in China were designated as the new subspecies Hexarthrius forsteri nyishi (Okuda et Maeda, 2016) in 2016, while the Six Sections of the Buddha's Spade were previously two subspecies:

Hexarthrius forsteri forsteri (Hope, 1840): originally a subspecies, mainly produced in India;

Hexarthrius forsteri kiyotamii (Nagai, 2000): Burmese subspecies that resembles a staghorn spade and is larger than the original subspecies.
