From 23 October to 1 November, the World Gymnastics Championships are held in Glasgow, England. When it comes to gymnastics, the project that ranks among the chinese sports dream teams is full of talents, and it is common for international competitions to win gold and silver. Its physical operation is a sport, but also has its project dangers, and people who have seen the movie "Death is Coming" may remember the horror of one of the gymnastics gyms. In real gymnastics, there are also living examples of "death is coming", and all this really happened to the members of the Chinese gymnastics team, Sunlan, who was paraplegic in the lower half of the height due to an accident; Wang Yan, who was injured and bid farewell to his career in advance; Dong Fangxiao, the injury became a lifelong pain.
Sunland
In July 1998, the Fourth Friendship Games were held in New York, USA, from Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, and the 17-year-old Sunland represented China in the Games. If there had been no tragedy caused by the unexpected missteps before the individual competition, perhaps she would have attended the press conference as the vault champion of the race and given a short interview to the media. The accident occurred during the warm-up training before the gymnastics individual competition, the time was about 6 o'clock in the morning of Beijing time on July 22 (the evening of July 21, New York time), and the vaulting horse competition was about to be staged in the Long Island Gymnastics Gymnasium. In the routine warm-up, the "hand flip body" action has been done twice, and Sunland wants to do it again, although for a team member like her who is strong in vaulting horses, this action can be said to be "rolling melon". Unexpectedly, this last jump actually triggered her lifelong regret, at the moment of her jump, the probe in front of the "horse" of the coach of the foreign team interfered with her, causing her to deform her movements, planted from a high altitude to the ground, and it was the first to land on the ground, unfortunately seriously injuring the cervical spine.
The assistant coach of the US national team who witnessed the tragedy said: Sunland's action is not very difficult, she seems to be a little hesitant when stepping on the jump, her body turns in the air a little more, as a result, she landed on the ground above her head and immediately fell to the ground. The Chinese coach and ambulance crew on the sidelines immediately rushed to do first aid, and the poor girl was in shock for about 10 seconds, and everyone quickly fixed measures for her and carried her on a stretcher to Nasu Medical Center. This can only be an accident. About 12 minutes later, Zhang Daiwei, a Chinese attending physician who was on duty at the Long Island Radiology Department, began examining Sunland. The result – Sunland's sixth and seventh cervical spine dislocation contusion, accompanied by nerve tissue damage, may lead to paralysis.
That night, the Organizing Committee of the Friendship Games sent a message to the Chinese delegation saying that in view of Sunland's serious condition, it was decided to invite Sunland's parents to New York as soon as possible to "help Sunland recover with the encouragement of family affection." The next day, the organizing committee held a press conference on the Sunland incident at the Long Island Gymnastics News Center, which was also the press conference with the most reporters attending the tournament. At the meeting, Dr. Leoni, attending physician of Nassau Medical Center, briefed the media on Sunland's injuries. After diagnosis and treatment, Sunland's cervical dislocation part has been successfully reduced, she is conscious, and her upper limb mobility has gradually improved, but she has lost consciousness below the chest. The doctor added: "I have never met a girl as tenacious as Sunland, although she is a 17-year-old girl who is in a very painful process. ”
After the doctor's diagnosis, Sunland's injury was a cervical vertebral fracture, paraplegia below the chest, and after 10 months, Sunland, whose injury was basically stable, returned to his motherland and continued to receive rehabilitation treatment at the China Rehabilitation Research Center. After that, Sunland walked into the campus, completed his studies, and joined the TV station as a host to participate in social welfare undertakings. There is still compensation for Sunland's injury, and the rights protection action has continued to this day, even against Bo Gongtang; and then it was revealed that Sunland was sexually assaulted during his life in the United States after being injured, which caused an uproar. Later, he fell out with the lawyer and was even prosecuted. Although Sunland's life has not been stable, at least on the emotional road, she found a home, and her agent Huang Jian met for more than ten years and entered the marriage hall, in August 2013, Sunland has been engaged to Huang Jian, and held a wedding before the end of the year. At 00:19 a.m. on April 14, 2014, Sunland delivered a baby boy by caesarean section at Beijing Aviation General Hospital.
Wang
The 2007 National Gymnastics Championships was held in Shanghai, and on June 10, in the women's high and low bar preliminaries, Wang Yan, a 15-year-old youngster from Zhejiang, was too close to the bar due to insufficient churning when doing "back flexing for two weeks", and after completing the first week of flips, her feet touched the high bar, and then she fell head down. The team doctor and coach immediately came to Wang Yan's side to observe the injury, and after finding that Wang Yan could not communicate normally, they began to give Wang Yan oxygen. Subsequently, the coach of the Zhejiang team and the team medical stretcher carried Wang Yan out of the venue, and notified the organizing committee to arrange an ambulance to take Wang Yan to the hospital. About 5 minutes after the injury, Wang Yan was carried to the car.
He was sent to the Sixth People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine for treatment. At that time, the examination confirmed the dislocation of the second and third cervical vertebral fractures, and skull traction was performed. After that, Wang Yan underwent "incision and reduction of iliac bone graft bone internal fixation surgery" and achieved success. About half a month after the operation, the strong Wang Yan also left the intensive care unit, completely out of the dangerous period after the operation. More than a month after the operation, Wang Yan, who originally thought that she would be paralyzed for life, stood up strongly, and could use the computer relatively flexibly, and she could also play with the doctor's wrist.
4 months after Wang Yan's injury, there was amazing good news, and Wang Yan was discharged from the hospital. On October 9, Wang Yan, who had been hospitalized for 4 months, was officially discharged from the hospital, and at that time, her condition was in good condition and she was able to stand and walk. Wang Yan, who left shanghai hospital, returned to Zhejiang to continue rehabilitation, and it was not until February of the following year that Wang Yan was officially discharged from the hospital, and the experience of more than half a year, for a little girl who was only 17 years old, there was no worse experience than this. However, Wang Yan is also lucky, compared to her predecessor Sunland, she is the biggest surprise to be able to stand up. "Wang Yan's cervical spine is seriously contused but can recover, and only 1.5% of this case has hope of recovery, and it is even rarer to recover to this extent like her." This is a passage that Wang Yan's rehabilitation attending physician Bai Yuehong once commented.
Dong Fangxiao
The Chinese gymnastics team is another player who has attracted attention from the outside world. Dong Fangxiao, born on January 23, 1986, a native of Tangshan, Hebei, entered the Tangshan Gymnastics Team training in 1991, entered the Hebei team in 1994, and was selected for the national team from Hebei in 1996. In 2001, Dong Fangxiao stopped training because of crotch pain during training and went home to rest, but after her National Games, she was forced to fight for the Hebei delegation under pressure, winning two gold medals in team and free gymnastics. These two gold medals ruined the health of a flower girl's life, and then Dong Fangxiao was diagnosed with necrosis of the femoral head and forced to retire, and her legs could not undergo strenuous exercise for the rest of her life. According to her attending physician, if treated promptly, she could have recovered 100%.
In June 2009, Dong Fangxiao was investigated by the International Gymnastics Federation for allegedly falsifying his age to participate in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. On 27 February 2010, the FISA announced the cancellation of Dong Fangxiao's achievements at the Sydney Olympic Games, and because of the Olympic Games, the FISAF has referred the matter to the International Olympic Committee. The International Gymnastics Federation stipulates that athletes must be 16 years old to participate in Olympic gymnastics competitions, and Dong Fangxiao's registration information with the International Sports Federation shows that she was born on January 20, 1983, which qualified for the Sydney Olympic Games and helped the Chinese gymnastics women's team win a bronze medal in the team competition. But while working as a staff member at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Dong Fangxiao's information indicates that Dong Fangxiao was born on January 23, 1986. After the INTERNATIONAL SPORTS FEDERATION's investigation, it believed that Dong Fangxiao was 14 years old when he competed at the Sydney Olympic Games. Accordingly, the FISA announced the cancellation of Dong Fangxiao's achievements at the Sydney Olympic Games, and since it involves the Olympic Games, the FIS has referred the matter to the International Olympic Committee. As a result, the Executive Committee of the International Gymnastics Federation announced that dong Fangxiao's team bronze medals in the team competition won together with her teammates were cancelled due to the cancellation of all the results of the Sydney Olympic Games. The executive committee also said it would cancel the results of many international competitions before Dong Fangxiao's age was not up to standard.
Dong Fangxiao, who has suffered a series of changes, has now left New Zealand with her husband and settled in Huntley, a small town on new Zealand's North Island.
Real cases of other accidental injuries and deaths in gymnastics worldwide:
In July 2003, Cameroonian gymnast Arim Hassan landed on his head during the Cameroon Gymnastics Championships, causing a skull fracture and dying after being taken to hospital.
In July 2004, German gymnast Ronny Ziesmer fell to the ground during a two-week free-flying flip, breaking his cervical vertebrae and injuring his spine. He was eventually diagnosed with general paralysis.
In 2004, in the high and low bar competition at the Athens Olympic Games, Polish gymnastics woman Joana Skovalenska dropped the bar during training and was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment. After being diagnosed by the hospital, the seventh section of her cervical spine was broken. Girls who were 22 years old at the time are likely to be accompanied by a wheelchair in the future.
In 2005, the Women's Individual All-Around at the European Gymnastics Championships also suffered a tragedy, when British star Tweedel suffered an accident during a warm-up for the second high and low pole competition, and suffered a serious neck injury. Later recovered and returned to the sports field.
In November 2006, in a private gymnastics gym in the United States, a male gymnastics coach made a mistake while demonstrating a flip to his students and died.
