In the 1960s, Lin Fashu, a carving master full of innovative consciousness, created a unique carving technique in Shoushan stone carving, known as the "Bud Carving Method".
This carving technique can be said to be the product of "born of stone", because it is uniquely suitable for Shoushan stone with the characteristics of "silver-clad gold" or "gold-clad silver", or two distinct color boundaries on the outer and inner layers.

"Silver wrapped gold", as the name suggests, the outer skin is white, the heart is yellow, like an egg with egg yolk wrapped in egg white. In view of the characteristics of this stone, the master of the story created a stunning character bud carving work, he turned the white leather layer into the character's robe, draped baggage, etc., and in the narrow space within the leather layer, he meticulously constructed the body structure and action of the character, achieving a magical artistic effect and becoming a "classic" in the history of Shoushan stone carving.
Today, we see the bud carving works of the master of the fashu, and the material is mostly flag descending stones. But in fact, the strange phenomenon in the Shoushan stone of "silver-clad gold" does not only exist in a single stone species, in addition to the flag descending stone, Tian Huangshi, Shanbo travertine, and lychee travertine are also common.

I have been working with silver-clad stones for a long time and found that their birth has its own unique environment. There are roughly two types: monolithic spawning and rib spawning.
Monolithic generation, refers to the stone matrix is originally "all yellow state", and then with the impact of the water flow, rolled down into the gravel soil, the environment in which the stone is located changes, and then through the water flow or rain infiltration, the color of the outer layer slowly turns white, the unchanged is the inner yellow.
There is also a special case in monolithic spawning, namely "egg shedding generation". The entire shape of these stones is almost in the shape of a goose egg, and the stones are sandwiched in the surrounding rock or scattered near the mine. Unlike the simple monolithic generation, the appearance of the flesh of this type of stone is often accompanied by hard cake skins or white sand. It is also more common for the flesh to be mixed or the color is not the end.

In addition, the generation of tendon grids is also one of the important ways for the birth of "silver-clad gold". "Rib formation" is only found in cave stones, the outer layer of the stone is surrounded by a rib grid, and the finished flesh removed from the rib grid is a silver-clad gold pebble.

Of course, these three generation processes, in addition to creating a "white outside and yellow" silver-clad gold, other situations such as outer yellow and inner white, outer red and inner white, outer white and inner red are also not uncommon, but silver clad gold is one of the best and most popular ones.
