Scottish-born American writer Douglas Stewart, who won the award for his first novel, Douglas Stuart, is one of four new faces on this year's Booker Prize finalists. The winning work Shugi Bane tells the story of Glasgow in the 1980s, and many of the descriptions in the novel are derived from the author's personal early life memories.

The publication of the award-winning novel book did not go well, and it was rejected by 32 publishers before and after, and finally went to Grove Atlantic in New York, which was published in the United States. But the Booker Prize judges said the book would become a literary classic. They also benchmarked this debut against classic writers such as D.H. Lawrence and James Joyce.
