Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau completely reshuffled his cabinet on Tuesday, appointing women as foreign ministers and defense ministers, the Associated Press reported in Toronto. Trudeau appointed Melanie Jolly as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Anita Anand as Minister of Defence. Cristian Freeland retained her posts as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. Since Trudeau's Liberal government was first elected in 2015, women have made up 50 percent of the cabinet.
Jolly, 42, is reportedly from Montreal, where she served as minister of economic development and previously as minister of heritage. Anand, from Oakville, Ontario, is the second woman to serve as Canada's defense minister. The 54-year-old previously served as procurement minister and led national vaccine procurement in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Trudeau also created a new role, the Minister of Mental Health and Addiction, a position that Caroline Bennett has appointed.
Asked if he would lead his party to the next general election, Trudeau said: "Yes. Trudeau has won three consecutive general elections but has failed to win a parliamentary majority in the past two elections. (Compiler/Liu Yuehua)
