He ushered in the "grunge" era, won the American Graphic Design Association Gold Medal, his first book "The End of Printing" is the best-selling book of all graphic design books, once "a creative person in the United States for the past 20 years", David is different from other designers, he did not experience professional design training, but crossed from sociologists to the design world, but his use of innovative printing styles and non-traditional layouts completely changed the design landscape at that time.
You know, before the age of 26, he didn't know what graphic design was, but after his appearance in "Beach Culture" and "Ray Gun" magazines, he inspired a large number of young designers around the world, making them eager to break with tradition and change their ideas and creative ways, among which the works in "Beach Culture" magazine, the root style, david won more than 150 awards, of course, his work also attracted strong criticism from traditional visual designers, however, These bad comments did not cause him any psychological problems.

Editing layouts did not have to stick to image layouts, consistent typography or one after another tenacious flow of copy rules, and even opened up new directions and possibilities for the flat language of the time. He summarizes his design philosophy as "experimental, intuitive, and individual", and he even argues that the lack of systematic design training has greatly helped the production of his work, he studies real stories, involving real people and events, sometimes involving music, and his works embody an emotional connection with people.
Of course, David did not forget to fight back when he was attacked by the opposition, he resolutely opposed the grid design, he believes that the big reason why graphic design is so boring is that people let the software in the computer build the grid and arrange it, almost did not add the idea of "people" themselves, as for the "readability" pursued by the opposition party, David believes that the word is exaggerated in the design, after all, most of the design can be read, but the story and meaning behind it are almost not processed. This discourages many designers, so the pursuit of "readability" by design will only trap the design.
David's first installment of ray Gun, featuring countless new custom fonts sent to him by people around the world, has no grids, formulas, or formats, while letting music and individual articles dictate the direction of the design and layout, which is a lot more work that design would have made it much more than most magazines would have to deal with, but also a lot more fun.
