The Port and Navigation Center of the Provincial Government investigated the green and low-carbon transformation and upgrading of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal (Suzhou section).

In order to implement the Jiangsu plan for a transportation powerhouse, accelerate the construction of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal Green Shipping Demonstration Zone, and promote the transformation and upgrading of the canal, on October 26, Yang Ben, deputy director of the Port and Shipping Development Center of the Provincial Department of Transportation, led a team to Suzhou to investigate the green and low-carbon transformation and upgrading of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal, and the relevant departments of the Provincial Port and Navigation Center, Suzhou Port and Navigation Center, and Suzhou New Town Investment and Development Co., Ltd. participated in the survey.

The survey took the form of on-site survey and discussion and exchange. Suzhou New Town Investment and Development Co., Ltd. introduced the construction and operation of Jiangsu (Suzhou) International Railway Logistics Center, multimodal transport and the development of Jianghai-Haihe intermodal transport; Suzhou Port and Navigation Center reported on the progress of the green and low-carbon transformation and upgrading of the Suzhou section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal, the effectiveness of relevant measures and existing problems, and put forward development strategies and suggestions; and the participants exchanged views on the key hotspots and difficulties of the green and low-carbon transformation and upgrading of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal.

In recent years, Suzhou has done a lot of research and promotion work around the construction of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt, the green and intelligent development of ports and shipping, and the transformation and upgrading of canal shipping. The transportation department continued to improve the public infrastructure of the waterway and enhance the service and guarantee capabilities; the local governments along the canal continued to improve the landscape, culture, tourism and other functions along the canal; relevant enterprises focused on the development of waterway container transportation, promoted the development of multimodal transport and river-sea river intermodal transport, and achieved remarkable results.

On September 24, the Port and Navigation Development Center of the Department of Transport of Jiangsu Province and the Suzhou Municipal Transportation Bureau signed the "Agreement on the Construction of the Suzhou Section of the Green Modern Shipping Comprehensive Improvement Project of the Jiangsu Section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal (Jiangnan Section)", and the main tasks for the construction of the Suzhou Beijing-Hangzhou Canal Green Modern Shipping Demonstration Zone are: the implementation of revetment improvement and upgrading, dredging of the silt section, the reconstruction of obstructive bridges, the upgrading of anchorage and service areas, and the improvement of navigational aids to improve the efficiency of canal navigation; the implementation of the integration and transformation of freight terminals along the line. Promote the intensive, large-scale, professional and intelligent development of ports; implement smart canal projects to enhance the level of shipping modernization; build cultural identities, green and beautify the environment along the river, and create green ecological and cultural waterways; build emergency law enforcement support bases to improve service guarantee capabilities.

At present, the Grand Canal Green Modern Shipping Comprehensive Improvement Project is accelerating the design of construction drawings, preliminary procedures and related coordination work, which is one of the top ten model tasks of Jiangsu, a transportation powerhouse. Through the construction of the project, Suzhou Port and Shipping will create a green modern shipping development demonstration belt with the connotation of "smooth, green and cultural", and contribute to the strong province of water transport and strong transportation.
