Baghdad, 31 Oct (Xinhua) -- Officials of the Iraqi Interior Ministry said on October 31 that three rockets were attacked on the same day near the "green zone" in the center of baghdad, causing no casualties.
The official, who did not want to be named, told Xinhua that the attack occurred at dawn that day, when three Katyusha rockets landed in the Mansour district near the "green zone." The attack caused damage to nearby buildings and civilian vehicles.
After the attack, Iraqi security forces quickly blockaded the "green zone" and stepped up their vigilance in downtown Baghdad. No organization or individual has yet claimed to have committed the attack.
Iraq holds elections for a new National Assembly on 10 October. Preliminary vote counting results show that the "Sadr Movement" led by Shiite religious leader Sadr won 73 seats, ranking first. The Fatah coalition, which has close ties to Shiite militias, has seen a sharp reduction in seats but has refused to accept the election results, and its supporters have recently held protest demonstrations near the "green zone."
Located in the center of Baghdad, the "Green Zone" is home to Iraqi government agencies and the U.S. and British embassies in Iraq. Similar attacks against the "green zone" occur from time to time.
