Foreword: China's territory is rich in the species of shovels of the genus Rotundifolia, rough statistics are about 34 or so, this number can be said to exceed China's saw spade genus (Prosopocoilus), deep mountain spade genus (Lucanus), second only to the spade / spade genus (Dorcus).
However, although there are many species of the genus Roundwing, perhaps it is the relationship between the difficulty of artificial breeding and the lack of relevant information, except for some species in the outbreak season, most of the round-winged spades are not circulated in the market, and they are rare, or even never seen.
Recently, we are sorting out the content of the genus Rotunda for inclusion on the website of the Roche Worm Society, and today we will share a few round-winged shovels named after China or provinces!
<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" > Neolucanus guangxii</h1>
Origin: Distributed in The Guangxi (Dayao Mountain) region of China, the male insect body length is about 41.5~44.1mm, and the female insect is 37.1~42.6mm.
Features: The lateral margin of the male's large jaw is straight, the surface of the jaw is flat, there are upward inner teeth at the proximal end, and the lower edge of the jaw has a serrated tooth process; the elytra are light orange brown, with black stripes at the base, lateral margin and seam, with strong gloss; there are 4 spikes behind the lateral side of the forefoot tibial segment.
Identification: Guangxi round-winged spade and Shaanxi round-winged spade (Neolucanus shaanxiensis) are similar, the following features can be distinguished: the male has 5 small inner teeth on the inner lower edge of the jaw of the large jaw; the head and the dorsal plate of the forebrea are not glossy; the elytra are colored, and the lateral margin and middle seam are black, and the elytra as a whole is shorter.
<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" > Guizhou round-winged shovel (Neolucanus guizhou)
</h1>
Origin: Distributed in the southern region of Guizhou (Leishan), the male body length is about 38.5~42.1mm, and the female insect body length is about 33.6~35.5mm.
Features: Adult jaw, head, forethia dorsal plate is black, with medium gloss; male large jaw upper edge has upward tooth process, the lower edge has about 7 irregular serrations; the lateral edge of the head has obvious anterior and posterior angles; there are reddish-brown markings on both sides of the dorsal plate of the forethia; the base of the elytra and the seam are black, and the remaining part is gradually spread into chestnut brown; and there are 5 to 6 spikes in the tibia of the forefoot.
Females are similar in color to males , with 3 small tooth processes in the slightly inward curvature of the large jaw ; central incoceroction of the dorsal plate of the forethia , and 4 spines on the outside of the tibia segment of the forefoot.
Identification: The appearance characteristics (body color) of Guizhou round-winged spade are relatively unique and are not easy to confuse with other round-winged spade species.
<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" > Neolucanus shaanxiensis
Origin: Distributed in the southwest of Shaanxi (Taibai Mountain) area, the male insect body length is about 39.2~47.5mm, and the female insect is about 35.5~41.5mm.
Features: The outer edge of the male jaw is straight, the end is slightly curved inward, and the inner edge has irregular tooth process of about 9 blunt teeth; the dorsal plate of the forethia has an overall rounded lateral edge and a reddish-brown stripe on the lateral edge; the elytra are reddish brown as a whole, with obvious gloss; and there are 4 spines on the outer edge of the tibia segment of the forefoot.
Identification: Shaanxi round-winged spade and Neolucanus robustus maekajanensis (origin of Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, etc.) are similar, the identification points are: slightly smaller body is more slender; there are small tooth processes on the upper edge of the large jaw end; and the dorsal plate of the head and forebreast is more glossy.
<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" > Neolucanus fuscus zhongguo
Origin: Distributed in the northeast of Guangxi (Liuzhou, Dayao Mountain Range), habitat benchmark altitude of about 1900m, male insect body length of about 34.9~37.3mm.
Features: The male has a large jaw, a black head, and dark reddish brown and shiny elytra wings with black edges and seams.
Identification: Males and Neolucanus fuscus round-winged spades are very similar, distinguishing points: the jaw is short and narrow, the head, the dorsal plate of the forebrea and the elytra are wider, the middle of the dorsal plate of the forebrea is concave and dull; the gloss of the elytra is relatively low, mainly reddish-brown, and some reddish-brown + black bicolor individuals are present.
Trivia: The subspecies name "zhongguo" originates from the Chinese pinyin of China, which was originally an independent species of Chinese round-winged shovel (Neolucanus zhongguo), and has now been downgraded to the Neolucanus fuscus subspecies.
Postscript: In fact, there is also a Tibetan round-winged shovel (Neolucanus tibetanus) named after the province, and the main production area is Metuo, which will not be elaborated here due to space limitations.
