Enjoy nature's pleasures in bird watching and butterfly hunting

The butterflies of siming mountains.

This National Day holiday, Ningbo weather is good, except for a little bit of heat, the others are perfect. For nature photography enthusiasts like me, it's natural to make good use of it. Before the holiday, I had planned: on October 2, I would go to Jiulongshan National Forest Park on the north bank of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge to photograph migrating birds of prey; on October 3, I would go to the Siming Mountain In Longguan Township to look for butterflies...

Eagle viewing in Kowloon Mountain

On the morning of October 2, my daughter and I drove from Ningbo in the morning, passed the Hangzhou Bay Cross-Sea Bridge, and when we reached the north shore exit, we could see a hill on the sea in front of us, which was Jiulong Mountain, which was located in Zhapu Town, Pinghu City.

It was really hot, and we were sweating as we carried our heavy equipment up the high, steep steps to the top of the hill. I met several people, some adults and children, some with binoculars, and some carrying "cannons" (super telephoto lenses) like me. They are also bird friends who come to see eagles, some from Shanghai, some from Suzhou.

"Crested Eagle! Just overhead! Someone shouted. I quickly raised the camera, and sure enough, I saw an eagle skimming overhead, and disappeared behind the mountain in a flash, and I only photographed a bird's ass. Crested eagles are not migratory birds of prey, but resident birds that can be seen in the four seasons of Zhejiang, and naturally belong to the local "indigenous" in Jiulong Mountain.

After a brief moment of excitement, there was a long wait. Seeing that it was almost 11:30, I decided to go home. Just as I was packing up my equipment, I overheard someone shouting, "An eagle is flying in the distance!" Oh no, there are two, both small birds of prey! I quickly took out the "cannon" again, and my daughter also raised her telescope to search the sky. "One is a swallow falcon, the other... It should be the Japanese Pine Sparrowhawk. Ah, they seem to be about to fight! The bird friends around me are constantly "broadcasting".

The swallow falcon and the Japanese pine sparrowhawk belong to the birds of prey that migrated south. A few minutes later, we saw a crested hummingbird skimming high in the air. This is a bee-loving eagle, and compared to other birds of prey, its neck is obviously more slender, so it is more recognizable and less likely to be mistaken. After filming the crested hummingbird, the sky, which had just been lively for a while, became silent again. There are very few migrating birds of prey that day, and I can only look forward to the next time I have time to come back. You know, in the early autumn of previous years, in the early autumn of the eagle viewing in Kowloon Mountain, thousands of birds of prey can be seen in a day!

Siming Mountain Butterfly Hunt

On October 3rd, I took my daughter to the Siming Mountains to look for butterflies, near a small reservoir in The Village of Lingxi in Longguan Township. Located on a high mountain with an altitude of more than 500 meters, The village is relatively quiet and quiet. In the morning, on the road from Dongqiao Town to Longguan Township, there were many cars and slow driving, and it seemed that there were many citizens playing in Siming Mountain.

Although there is no sunlight along the road, there are still many butterflies, and the most seen are butterflies of the genus Butterfly in the family Butterfly family. Butterflies in this genus seem to be less fond of visiting flowers to suck nectar, preferring to suck sap, so they often appear on shadier boulevards. We see the Butterfly and the Butterfly. The butterfly is the "genus chief" of this genus and does not seem to be very common in Ningbo. Its characteristics are more obvious and are not easily mistaken: the ventral surface of the wings is a very dark tan, the hindwing has 6 eye spots, and the outer edge has a distinct horn-like protrusion; the hindwing also has gray-white transverse stripes, slightly cloud-like.

On the same day, I also photographed a butterfly with obvious brown and white markings in the mountains, and it was visiting the flowers, and the sun penetrated its wings, adding to the brilliance of this beautiful butterfly. However, I had never seen this butterfly before, and I couldn't call it by name. After returning home, I turned over several professional butterfly atlases, but I didn't find the exact same one. Helplessly, I sent its photo to the circle of friends and asked friends who were familiar with butterflies for advice. The answer came quickly, it was a butterfly. I flipped through the book again, and it turned out that there were still some in the book, but I didn't notice it. The butterfly is the "genus chief" of the genus Pterodactyl in the family Pteraceae and is uncommon in Ningbo. Friends told me that this "genus leader" is very similar to the same genus of butterflies as the white-spotted vermicelli butterfly and the ring-banded vermicelli butterfly, and the main feature is that it has a long arrow-like marking in the middle of its forewings.
