Fin whales, also known as fin whales, long-cap whales, and ridge-fin whales, belong to the baleen whale genus. They are one of the fastest swimmers and often hunt for prey in the deep sea. The fin whales that live in Antarctic waters are one of these subspecies, the Antarctic fin whale.
Posture characteristics
Adult baleen whales are spindle-like, with a body length of about 25 meters and a weight of up to 70 tons. Their heads are large , about 1/4 of their body length , and have two jet holes on the top of their heads ; the baleen at the lower lip on the right side of the large mouth is white and gray on the left; and the eyes are small. Fin whales have a bluish-grey back and a white belly. Fin whales each have 1 dorsal fin, two pectoral fins evolved from their forelimbs, and a broader caudal fin. In addition , there are many folds in the throat of the fin whale , which extend all the way to the umbilicus.
Filter food
Fin whales feed on krill , small fish , squid and crustaceans , and usually dive into the deep ocean to hunt for krill colonies. When they eat, they open their mouths, move forward at high speed, swallow a large amount of seawater, and then close their mouths, spit out the seawater through the whale's whiskers, and leave krill, small fish and other small animals in their mouths and become delicious in the belly.
Breathing mode
Fin whales need to float to the surface of the sea when breathing, but the tail will remain below the surface. With each breath, they linger on the surface of the water for about 1.5 minutes, during which they jet multiple times. They can dive underwater for 10 to 15 minutes after ventilation.
Reproductive characteristics
The gestation period of fin whales is about 1 year long. The young whales are weaned 6 to 7 months after birth and follow the females to the winter feeding area. Typically, fin whales mature sexually around 10 years of age and are produced every 2 to 3 years. Females give birth to 1 juvenile per litter, but there are exceptions, with a record of up to 6 baby whales being born at a time.
Fin whales are common sense
01 Deep Sea Greyhound: Fin whales swim at the fastest speed of about 37 kilometers per hour, known as the "Deep Sea Greyhound".
02 Whale Song: Refers to the long, loud, low-frequency sound made by whales during the reproductive season.
