During his studies in Japan, he was first exposed to Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary ideas of overthrowing feudal autocracy and establishing a democratic republic. The idea of revolutionary devotion came to mind.
In 1907, he was introduced to the League. After graduating from Japan the following year, he returned to China and began to serve as a pipe leader of the first battalion of the Jiangxi Mixed Brigade, but was arrested for propagating revolutionary activities and ideas in the new army. Finally, with the help of nobles, he fled to Shanghai. Later, he ran to Kunming to serve as an instructor and military personnel in yunnan.
In 1911, he also supported the Wuchang Uprising, and the following year he became the governor of Jiangxi. During this time, he met his wife Hua Shiqi.

On February 20, 1946, nearly half a year after Japan's surrender, Li Liejun died of a myocardial infarction in Chongqing at the age of 64. The Nationalist government ordered a state funeral, and Chiang Kai-shek personally presided over the memorial service.
Today, in the left halfway of the Wuning County Martyrs' Cemetery in Jiujiang, Jiangxi, in a field of pine and cypress, a tall bluestone tombstone is erected, on which is conspicuously inscribed the Wei Tidan character: "Tomb of General Li Liejun And Madam Hua Shiqi."
