In 2012, the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center created the drama "The Piano of Steel" based on the film adaptation, specially invited Guo Xiaodong to star, and also gained word of mouth and influence nationwide. From May 28 to June 5, a more youthful drama "The Piano of Steel" was staged at the Duanjun Theater of the Shanghai Theater Academy. This is an internship repertoire of the 2018 Class of Acting and Stage Art, and it is also one of the performances of this year's Shangju Art Season.

"The Piano of Steel" reflects the group portrait of the times in the early 1990s, in the context of the reform of the old industrial base in northeast China, when a group of laid-off industrial workers helped each other in distress and struggled to save themselves. Through the humor and hardships of the little people, a touching and profound family and friendship is revealed, and the story of a group of men fighting for dignity is revealed.

For the choice of this work as the internship creation repertoire of the Acting Department, Xiao Ying, director of the play and deputy director of the Department of Performing Drama, said, "On the occasion of the centenary of the founding of the Party, our Performance Department chose the repertoire of "The Piano of Steel" with two significance, the first point is that on the occasion of the centenary of the founding of the Party, we must review the greatness and difficulty of reform and opening up from this work; the second is that this play has a positive and upward fighting spirit, which has a good transmission to students and the audience. ”
"The Piano of Steel" is a realistic theme work, and many characters played by Wang Qianyuan, Qin Hailu and other actors in the movie that year came to life, which impressed the audience. In this creation, Xiao Ying also hopes that students can independently complete a complete role creation in the third year of the acting department, so that these young actors can create typical character images with flesh and blood. In terms of stage presentation, it is hoped to achieve poetic and romantic expression.
For young post-00s students, it is not easy to understand and reproduce the mental condition of laid-off workers in the Great Northeast during the reform and opening up and transformation period, so the teachers who went to the theater led the students to consult materials, look for information, and analyze the lives, emotions, beliefs and values of this group of people in the context of that era. In the rehearsal, the students kept trying, and in the repeated collisions, a lot of sparks were rubbed.
This is the first time that the 18th grade acting class has carried out the creation of a complete character image with a realistic theme, which is a challenge for them. In the play, a group of people in distress work together to create a "steel piano", and also use this piano to get out of the sound of their own times. Xiao Ying said that this is true for making the piano, and the same is true for making plays. In the process of participating in the performance and production, the students of the crew also used a spirit of "dare to think and dare to fight" to complete this big play together and create their own "steel piano".
