有一定英文基礎的人一般都知道，tax, tariff, duty均可以表示“稅”。前幾天在給一個法國客戶起草信保訂單的時候，我就注意了下，阿裡平台使用的是TAX這個單詞。
那麼，tax, tariff, duty有什麼差別呢？我查閱了一些資料，然後整理一下釋出出來，供大家參考。
一句話概括：tax 是稅的總稱，duty / tariff 是 tax 的兩個種類。
tax
首先我們來說說“tax”。Tax 是稅的總稱，你把 tax 付給政府，政府再用來公衆建設，就是常說的“取之于民，用之于民”。
英文解釋：Tax is an amount of money that you have to pay to the government so that it can pay for public services such as road and schools.
Tax最常見最寬泛，指政府以各種不同方法向個人或機關征收所得稅、房地産稅等各種稅款。側重實際征收金錢。對人收的稅，如收入稅(income tax)、财富稅(wealth tax)，對物征的稅，如增值稅(VAT)、營業稅(sales tax)等。通常泛指的征稅（to levy tax）、 減稅（cut tax）、避稅天堂（tax haven）等都用的這個詞。
例句：
This tax should be abolished. 這種稅應該取消。
He was arrested for tax evasion. 他因逃稅被捕。
This accountant was good at exploiting tax loopholes. 這個會計善于利用稅收漏洞。
tariff
再來說說“tariff”。Tariff主要是指政府對進口大批商品所征收的關稅，通常會有固定的比例。
英文解釋：A tariff is a tax that a government collects on goods coming into a country.
Tariff 特指政府對進口貨物征收的稅。
我經常把 tariff 拼成tarrif，很容易拼錯，一定要注意下。
例句：
The government decided to impose a protective tariff on foreign cars. 政府決定對進口汽車征收保護稅。
America imposes a whopping tariff on Brazilian sugar ethanol.美國對巴西蔗糖乙醇征收高關稅。
Tariff barriers crimped the flow of imports.關稅壁壘妨礙了進口貨物的流入。
duty
再說說“Duty”。Duty主要是指向購買的特殊商品向政府支付的稅/關稅.
英文解釋：Duties are taxes which you pay to the government on goods that you buy especially those that you bring into a country.
購買商品時需要支付的稅被稱為 duty，尤其是在國外購買帶到國内的商品。
這也就是為什麼機場的“免稅商店”對應的英文是 duty-free shop。
例句：
The duty on imported vodka has been raised. 進口伏特加的關稅已經提高了。
This article is free of duties. 這貨物免稅。
The article is subject to customs duties. 這商品需納關稅。
Tax, tariff, duty有時候可以通用，但是有一定差別和習慣用法。
在談論“稅率”的時候，更傾向用 tariff：The tariff is 13% of the total cost；
在談論具體“稅費”的時候，更傾向用 duty：a duty of $500.
某一些習慣的說法不能輕易改變。比如：經常用到的免稅店 duty-free shop，關稅壁壘tariff barrier。
