Known for its diverse shopping malls and avid street life, Mong Kok, Hong Kong, China, is one of the most visited shopping districts in Hong Kong, attracting many residents and tourists alike.
In 1988, Hong Kong began to renovate a site in the centre of Mong Kok, consisting of four predominantly old, low-rise residential blocks. Developer Eagle King Group Co., Ltd. plans to build a mixed-use project on site, hoping that the project will lead to economic revitalization throughout the region. Built on the attractiveness of Mong Kok, Langham Place complements the low- and mid-end retail market with high-quality tenants and expands its appeal by building the first five-star hotel and Grade A office building in the region.
The developer designated JERDE to develop a dedicated solution for the retail centre based on the project site, and JERDE presented a design that integrated and vertically expanded Mong Kok's vibrant street experience. In order to attract traffic, we have designed multiple entrances in the surrounding streets and subway stations.
The atrium is magnificent, and visitors begin their experience of a 15-storey retail center. The nine-story glass atrium allows passers-by to get a glimpse into the interior and attract visitors.
Several dedicated escalators carry customers through 300 shops and restaurants.

The langham place project site is prominently located, making it destined to be the symbol and central gathering place of the region. It is also bounded by two main pedestrian streets, and the project site is located between the two main pedestrian streets that run through the CBD. To improve public accessibility, the site was located adjacent to the Metro Station (via 2 metro lines) and a proposed bus terminal, transforming the area into a bustling urban destination, transportation hub and international landmark.
Innovative human flow-line techniques make it easy to navigate through the 15-storey building's 300 shops and restaurants. A continuous multimedia screen is projected onto the atrium ceiling.
In terms of total audience size, total revenue and average seat income, Langham Place Cinema is second to none in Hong Kong. Since its opening in December 2004, it has averaged about 100,000 visitors per day.
