In order to always motivate itself, the Northern Wei Dynasty often held small horse races and regular large hunting activities.
Once, Tuoba Tao held a hunting event and ordered the civil and military officials, as well as palace attendants and soldiers, to participate together. Due to the grand ceremony and the large number of horses needed, Tuoba Tao asked the minister Gu Bi to organize the event. Gu Bi is careful and upright, so Tuoba Tao is still more at ease.

The "Complete Collection of Wise Men" records that when Tuoba Tao saw this scene, Tuoba Tao was furious, thinking that the main person in charge of this matter was Gu Bi, so he scolded: "Sharp-headed slave, dare to judge me!" Return the stage (go back) first to behead this slave! (The "sharp-headed slave" in this sentence refers to Gu Bi, because Gu Bi's head is like a brush, relatively sharp, and when someone scolds him, he likes to scold him in this way.) The ancients liked to insult each other from appearance, and the more famous example is Liu Bei in the Three Kingdoms period, who was often called a "big ear thief". ）
Obviously, Tuoba Tao was in a hurry at this moment, otherwise he would not have been so speechless. Seeing that the emperor was so angry, the others also echoed it, clamoring for the emperor to kill this person.
In the face of this battle, Gu Bi's subordinates took the lead in panicking, but Gu Bi, as a party, did not panic at all, and the Complete Collection of Wisdom Tanks recorded that Gu Bi explained to people:
"I think that the emperor has made the hunt uncomfortable, and his sin is also small. If you are not prepared, you will not be prepared, and you will be free to do so, and your sin will be great. Now the north of Di Kong, the south of the unquenched, cunning ambition, peeping at the border, is my worries. Therefore, the choice of fat horses to prepare for the army is not a far-sighted concern. If I make the country advantageous, why should I avoid death! The Lord can do it, and this is my sin, not the blame of the Secretary of State, etc. ”
The meaning of this sentence is that in Gu Yi's cognition, sin is divided into small sins and major sins, minor sins are not serving the good monarch, and major sins are failure to take care of the safety of the country. Now that there are enemy spies in both the north and the south, we should be careful to deal with them, so we use fat horses for armament, not for fun.
The "Complete Collection of Wisdom Tanks" records that when Tuoba Tao was angrily preparing to punish Gu Bi, after hearing this sentence, not only did he lose all his anger, but he was in a good mood, and said very happily: "There is a pen gong (ps: when angry, call people "sharp-headed slaves", and when happy people call people "pen gong") So, the treasure of the country is also", and then rewarded Gu Bi again.
In this matter, Gu Bi's idea of thinking of danger in peace and danger, and the way to offend the emperor in order to persuade the emperor, are really commendable. However, when tasting this matter, Gu Bi's behavior is actually very wise, rather than foolishly exchanging his life for it. He deliberately told his thoughts in such detail to his subordinates, and then arranged for them to be transmitted to the emperor's ears. And he deliberately added the words "The Lord can reason" in these words, which means that the jun will naturally understand what I have done, and if he does not understand, then he will not be a ming jun.
After reading this story, future generations often praise Gu Yi as a loyal and good counselor.
However, after carefully tasting the charm, it was found that the highest wisdom in this story was not Gu Bi, but Tuoba Tao, the Taiwu Emperor of the Northern Wei Dynasty.
Is hunting really like what Gu Bi calls "panning"? Non also! Ancient royalty was very keen on hunting. The royal hunting customs have a very long origin, after all, human beings in the struggle with nature, indispensable to fight with wild beasts, hunting can be said to be a nature, instinct. According to the book "Zhou Li", since the Zhou Dynasty, Tianzi often held hunting activities, and this custom was also inherited by successive emperors, and it was held once or even many times a year.
In the ancient wars dominated by cold weapons, hunting activities can be a good exercise in the army's combat cooperation and combat skills. In addition, there is a very important purpose: to show military strength and boost morale. That's why hunting ceremonies are held so grandly.
