The first African-American! Adriana Adams was elected Speaker of the New York City Council

On Wednesday (January 5), Adrienne Adams was elected speaker of the New York City Council, becoming the first African-American speaker in the history of the New York City Council.

According to the Associated Press, the New York City Council voted 49 votes in favor and 2 against to appoint Queens Democrat Adams as speaker of the New York City Assembly.

Adams, 61, lives in Queens, attended Bayside High School and was a former classmate of Eric Adams, the current mayor of New York.

On Wednesday (Jan. 5), members of the New York City Council were sworn in, and 31 of the 51 members were women.

Adams will preside over New York City's first-ever female-majority parliament.

Adams' term as speaker of the New York City Assembly will end at the end of 2023.
