There are the brave ones, there are the middle braves, and there are the lower braves. The world has the middle, dare to straighten his body; the first king has the way, dare to do his will; the upper does not follow the king of the chaotic world, the lower is not inferior to the people of the chaotic world; where the benevolent place is without poverty, where the benevolent place is dead, there is no wealth; the world knows, it wants to enjoy with the world, and the world does not know, then it is independent between heaven and earth and is not afraid: it is the upper yongye. Courtesy and thriftiness, great faith, and light goods, the sages dare to push and still, and those who are not handsome dare to help and abolish: it is Zhongyongye. Light and heavy goods, idyllic and widely relieved, not sympathetic to the feelings of right and wrong, in the hope of winning people's intentions: it is the next yongya. (Xunzi Sexual Evil Chapter XXIII, 19)

The realm of human wisdom is high and low, and bravery is also divided into realms: there is superior bravery, there is medium bravery, and there is inferior bravery. Regarding bravery, Xun Zi also said in the "Honor and Disgrace Chapter":

There are the brave men of the dogs, there are the brave men of the thieves, there are the braves of the villains, and there are the brave men of the warriors. (Xunzi Daily Lesson 045 丨 Real bravery, not fearless)

There is the right way in the world, dare to stand up and defend it; the way of the first king is handed down and dare to implement it; it is not obedient to the emperor of the chaotic world, and it is not mixed with the people of the chaotic world; it is not vulgar and not accustomed. Where benevolence lies, although poor do not think of suffering, benevolence is lost, although rich and noble do not think of pleasure; Lu Wenbi said:

Where there is benevolence in this word, although the poor are willing, the benevolent are dead, and the rich are gone.

When everyone in the world knows me, they share weal and woe with the people of the world; if the people of the world do not know me, they are safely independent of heaven and earth, and they have nothing to fear. Mencius:

Happy with the world, worried about the world.

The poor are good at themselves, and the poor are good at the world.

It's superior bravery.

Polite and respectful and humble, valuing Zhongzheng honesty and underestimating money, daring to recommend a virtuous person and putting him in a high position, and daring to pull him down and dismiss an unskilled person: this is moderate bravery.

Dare to make friends and appoint people who are better than themselves, rather than trying to obstruct and avoid. It is difficult for a person with low self-esteem to do this.

Looking down on one's own life and valuing money, not caring about misfortune and being liberated and exonerated from sin in many ways; disregarding right and wrong, the actual situation of right and wrong, and taking it as one's wish to hope to overcome others: this is inferior bravery.

Not being afraid of death is not worthy of admiration, and it is really brave to be afraid of life.
