On February 10, the latest data released by market research firm Mercury Research showed that Intel's share of the server chip market declined in the fourth quarter of last year, but regained some market share in the personal computer chip market.
Now Intel is working to regain the company's advantage in processor technology. In the fourth quarter of last year, Intel's share of the lucrative server chip market declined, ceding more of its disks to AMD, but fortunately regained some share of the personal computer chip market.
According to data released by Mercury Research, AMD's share of the entire chip market reached a record high of 25.6% during the same period, including gaming machine custom chips as well as Internet of Things chips. That figure surpasses amdhaded an all-time high of 25.3 percent in 2006.
Intel still accounts for the majority of the entire chip market, but no longer has the technological advantages of the past. This has prompted many customers to look for alternative products such as AMD chips or self-designed chips. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has promised to regain its edge with new products that outperform longtime competitors.
The PC chip market has been booming for the past two years, which is good news for both Intel and AMD. Mercury Research found that the personal computer chip market revenue surged 11% to $74 billion in 2021. In addition, the market size of ARM architecture chips is also growing, and the shipment volume of the entire personal computer chip industry will reach 500 million in 2021.
AMD dominates the gaming console chip market. AmD has also made a lot of profits thanks to strong market demand for Sony and Microsoft game consoles.
At one point, Intel controlled more than 99 percent of the server chip market. But Mercury Research data shows that AMD's share of the server chip market rose to 10.7% in the fourth quarter of last year, up 3.6 percentage points from the same period last year.
During the same period, Intel's share of the desktop computer chip market rose to 83.8%, and its share of the notebook chip market was 78.4%.
ARM architecture chips once accounted for only a small part of the pc chip market. As Apple's Mac product line fully shifts to ARM architecture chips, the market share of such products is growing. The market share of ARM architecture chips reached 9.5% in the fourth quarter of last year, almost three times that of the same period last year. (Tatsumi)
