On February 10, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released data showing that Huawei was the largest applicant in 2021 with 6,952 published PCT applications. Huawei has topped the list of applicants for five consecutive years.

It is reported that a total of 13 Chinese companies have entered the top 50 of the global PCT international patent applicant list, including Huawei, OPPO, BOE, ZTE, vivo, DJI, Tencent, Xiaomi, etc.

According to data released by the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva on February 10, mainland applicants filed 69,500 international patent applications through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) route in 2021, an increase of 0.9% year-on-year. It was followed by the United States (59,570 applications, +1.9%), Japan (50,260 applications, -0.6%), the Republic of Korea (20,678 applications, +3.2%) and Germany (17,322 applications, -6.4%).

From the perspective of the company, Huawei became the largest applicant in 2021 with 6952 published PCT applications. It was followed by Qualcomm (3931), Samsung Electronics (3041), LG Electronics (2885) and Mitsubishi (2673).

According to the news released by the State Intellectual Property Office, in 2021, the mainland PCT international patent application once again ranked first in the world, and Huawei ranked first in the list of applicants for five consecutive years.

It is understood that Huawei began to apply for the first Chinese patent as early as 1995 and the first US patent in 1999. In 2008, it ranked first in the World Intellectual Property Organization for PCT patent applications for the first time. In March 2021, Huawei said in the Huawei Innovation and Intellectual Property White Paper 2020 that continuous investment in innovation has made Huawei one of the world's largest patent holders. By the end of 2020, Huawei has more than 40,000 valid authorized patents (more than 100,000) worldwide, and more than 90% of the patents are invention patents.

Huawei insists on investing more than 10% of its sales revenue in research and development every year, and in 2020, Huawei will engage in about 105,000 people engaged in research and development. It is reported that in 2021, Huawei is expected to invest more than 130 billion yuan in research and development in various fields.

13 Chinese companies entered the top 50

In addition to Huawei, there are also some Chinese companies that have entered the list. According to the state intellectual property office, a total of 13 Chinese enterprises entered the top 50 of the global PCT international patent applicant list, an increase of 1 from 2020. Among them, OPPO (2208 pieces) and BOE (1980 pieces) ranked 6th and 7th respectively.

It is understood that this is also the third consecutive year that OPPO has ranked second among Chinese enterprises. OPPO said that OPPO intellectual property rights have a mature layout in the world, with patents in more than 40 countries and regions. As of December 31, 2021, OPPO had more than 75,000 patent applications worldwide and more than 34,000 grants worldwide. Among them, the number of invention patent applications exceeded 68,000, and invention patent applications accounted for 90% of all patent applications.

The remaining 10 companies in the top 50 are Ping An Technology (11th, +6th), ZTE (13th, +3rd), vivo (16th, +7th), Shenzhen DJI (20th, +1st), Shenzhen AAC Acoustics (29th, +58th), Wuhan Huaxing Optoelectronics (32nd, -8th), Shenzhen Huaxing Optoelectronics (33rd, -9th), Tencent (42nd, +11th), ByteDance (46th, -14th), Xiaomi (48th, +8th).
