On November 7, 2001, the Nanchang Intermediate People's Court's retrial judgment once again found that the case had "clear basic facts and sufficient basic evidence" and rendered a judgment with the same result as the original first-instance judgment. Zhang Yuhuan was still not satisfied and appealed again. On November 28, 2001, the Jiangxi Higher People's Court rendered a final ruling: the appeal was rejected and the original judgment was upheld. After being imprisoned, Zhang Yuhuan insisted on shouting injustice.

On August 4, 2020, the Jiangxi Higher People's Court pronounced a retrial verdict on the case, and finally declared Zhang Yuhuan innocent. He lost his freedom for 9,778 days, the longest-reported detainee in public custody.

On October 30, 2020, the Jiangxi Higher People's Court reached a state compensation agreement with Zhang Yuhuan, paying Zhang Yuhuan a total of 4,960,521.5 yuan in state compensation, including 3,390,521.5 yuan in personal freedom compensation for 9,778 days of innocent detention and 1.57 million yuan in consolation for mental damage.
