According to foreign media reports, according to data from science and technology research company Canalys, global electric vehicle sales in 2021 will be 6.5 million, an increase of 109% over 2020. The total sales volume of the global automotive market will increase by only 4% in 2021 and is still in a sluggish state.

Canalys pointed out that in 2021, the market demand for electric vehicles will remain strong, and if it were not for the "chronic shortage of parts" faced by automakers, sales would be higher. Of the total global sales, Chinese mainland more than 3.2 million electric vehicles were sold, accounting for half of global electric vehicle sales and 2 million more than in 2020. Wuling Hongguang MiniEV is still the best-selling electric model in the Chinese mainland market in 2021, and Tesla's electric model occupies the second and third places.
Jason Low, principal analyst at Canalys, said electric vehicles will account for 15% of New Car sales in China in 2021, more than double that of 2020. He pointed out that from small, inexpensive city cars to mainstream and high-end cars and SUVs, new models are available every month, and there are still great growth opportunities in 2022 and beyond.
In addition, a total of 2.3 million electric vehicles were sold in the European market, accounting for 19% of new car sales. While demand is still growing, only 4 percent of new cars sold in the U.S. in 2021 will be electric, or about 535,000. Chris Jones, vice president and principal analyst at Canalys, said pickups would "significantly boost" the U.S. electric vehicle market in 2022.
From the perspective of electric vehicle brands, the report shows that Tesla leads the global electric vehicle market with a 14% share; Volkswagen Group ranks second with a market share of 12% and occupies a leading position in the European market; SAIC, including SAIC, GM and Wuling, ranks third with an 11% share; BYD ranks fourth with a market share of 9%, and its electric vehicle sales increased by more than 200% in 2021.
