Qinzhou City, Guangxi Is the Birthplace of Xiaoxing Pottery, and the unique purple and white clay on the east and west banks of the Qin river, coupled with the production process that has been passed down for thousands of years, has bred one of the four famous potteries in China. Dong Huanjun, a sophomore in 1990 at the Qingdao Arts and Crafts School in Shandong Province, had his first intimate contact with Xiao Xingtao.
Dong Huanjun used the summer vacation time to go to the old Xiaoxing Pottery Factory to intern, and saw at close range how the masters at that time created and produced, at that time he began to really like Theoxing Pottery, and his graduation creation in 1992 was to make a group of works of Xiaoxing Pottery. The graduation works composed of hanging plates, flower plates, etc., are only the introductory works of Young Xing pottery in the eyes of Dong Huanjun today, but they shine in the graduation exhibition at that time.
After graduating from university, Dong Huanjun officially entered the industry as a pottery craftsman, and together with the entire industry, experienced the decline at the end of the last century and the gradual revival of the 21st century to usher in new glory. In this long process, new masters of Xiaoxing pottery have emerged at the forefront of the times, while Dong Huanjun, who came from a science class with profound painting and carving skills, has almost disappeared for twenty years.
A self-built house in the downtown area of Qinzhou is not only Dong Huanjun's home residence but also the base camp for his creation of Xiaoxing pottery. Dong Huanjun, who lives in the bustling and bustling city, calls himself a "Tao Hermit", painstakingly pursues the true meaning of pottery from life, does not accumulate steps to a thousand miles, and the accumulation of twenty spring and autumn months, and the sudden burst of inspiration sparks have met one by one, resulting in a wonderful reaction called qualitative change.
After half a month of continuous attempts and many failures, Dong Huanjun's "Bionic Water Chestnut Series Pot" inspired by life was finally successfully made and won the silver medal of the 2014 "Hundred Flowers Cup" Chinese Arts and Crafts Award.
Innovation is the first driving force to lead the development, while making great strides on the road of bionic pottery creation, Dong Huanjun also continues to innovate and open up two new roads of antiques and humanities, and the three series of works go hand in hand, Dong Huanjun has become an award-winning regular in major competitions.
Kung Fu pays off, and after rubbing shoulders with the Gold Award several times, Dong Huanjun finally went one step further in 2020 and took off the hat of "Millennium Old Two". The work "He Tianxia" won the State Guest Souvenir Award in the State Guest Group of the First China-ASEAN Arts and Crafts Creative Design Competition.
As the only gift of Xiaoxing pottery in the state guest ceremony of the 2020 China-ASEAN Expo, "He tianxia" was given to guests from all over the world who came to attend the conference, and Xiaoxing pottery has become a cultural business card in Guangxi. Beginning in the Sui Dynasty, flourishing in the Tang Dynasty, and refined in the Qing Dynasty, the Pottery of Xiaoxing can still be revitalized today, and it is inseparable from the passing on of the torch from generation to generation.
After becoming a master of arts and crafts in Guangxi in 2016, preaching and teaching has become one of Dong Huanjun's daily tasks, and he has brought out 5 apprentices. Dong Yang, 24, is Dong Huanjun's son and one of his apprentices. As a young generation after 95, in addition to inheriting the traditional production process of Xiaoxing pottery, many modern scientific and technological means have also been used by them to create Xiaoxing pottery.
In the past thirty years, from "pottery hermit" to industry master, from lonely to apprentice, Dong Huanjun's world of Xiaoxing pottery has become more and more colorful, but what has never changed is his adherence and love for pottery.
