A male doctor in Canada, who used his sperm to conceive a female patient through artificial insemination while treating fertility problems, has now determined that she has at least 17 children. Some children do not know that their biological father is him.
According to Canadian media reports on March 10, 83-year-old Norman Bavin is a fertility doctor from Canada. In 1973, he moved from Belfast to Canada, where he was hired by Ottawa General Hospital to manage the high-risk pregnancy unit.
In 1980, he claimed that he had used donor sperm to help female patients conceive 118 babies, and that the sperm of female patient partners had helped them conceive 148 babies. Four years later, Bavin left to start broadview fertility clinic, the only private practice in Ottawa that specializes in artificial insemination.
In November 2021, a Judge of the Ontario High Court approved a $13.375 million settlement for Bavin. Compensation will be paid by the Canadian Medical Protection Association. The association is a professional association that operates like an insurance company, and compensation is distributed to approximately 250 claimants.
The allegations show that during the opening of the fertility clinic, Bavin replaced the donor's sperm with his own, resulting in at least 17 women giving birth to his children.
Rebecca said at the hearing she was "disgusted" when she learned at the age of 25 that Bavin was her biological father. She said: "In that moment, my life changed forever. "For a while, I felt like the guy in the mirror wasn't me anymore."
One patient said she had not yet told her teenage daughter that her father was not her biological father. She said: "I felt violated, I felt dirty. ”
