I think that when I talk about "Dream of the Red Chamber" in Kaohsiung, I will not touch too much "red learning", red science is like the sea, falling into it and never climbing out again. Many of my students are still studying the "Dream of the Red Chamber" class in the research institute, and in the end they can't touch too many things related to the novel, and they have been turning around, such as who the author is, what is the author's family lineage, and who Bao Yu innuendos to - this is called red study.
It's not that research is not important, but when we read a novel, it is a novel, and it should be very good to read. We have to read it in and let it have a conversation with our lives. It doesn't have to be done as research. However, in the traditional Chinese cultural Taoism, the average person feels that if any book can be circulated, it must have the meaning of the text. "Wen" is the article, and "Tao" is the Tao. Only if a book can carry a kind of morality can it have the significance of circulation, like the "Four Books" and "Five Classics", which have a major cultural mission. I think that novels are something that develops from the pastimes after tea and dinner, and first of all, it must be "good-looking" and "interesting".
I've seen several interesting versions of "Dream of the Red Chamber", and they will pull "Dream of the Red Chamber" to the point that it is going to tell the story of anti-Qing and restoration. For example, there is a scholar who specifically says which person is the one who opposed the Qing Dynasty at the end of the Ming Dynasty. "Dream of the Red Chamber" becomes very strange, a bit like a formula, everyone can attach what they want. That scholar, who only had anti-Qing and restoration in his heart, applied the formula of anti-Qing and restoration in it, and said that the head was the Tao, and he was completely able to justify himself.
Another scholar said that the novel was about the Shunzhi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty and Dong Xiaowan. The Shunzhi Emperor fell in love with Dong Xiaowan, later became a monk in Wutai Mountain, and "Dream of the Red Chamber" is a metaphor for this story, so who is Baoyu and who is Daiyu, the same head is the Tao, and it can also justify itself. After reading these studies, I found that the novel "Dream of the Red Chamber" can be justified by any story you apply.
I think that the first people who liked to read the manuscript of "Dream of the Red Chamber" may not care whether it is literature or not, whether it will be put into the literature department as an object of study, the important thing is that it is so good-looking, so that you can see it at the age of twelve, look at it at the age of thirty, and look at it at the age of forty. Watching "Dream of the Red Chamber" at different ages, feeling different, but all "good-looking".
When I was a child, my family forbade me to watch "Dream of the Red Chamber" on the one hand, and on the other hand, I said that "Dream of the Red Chamber" was really beautiful. The adult world is contradictory. I was not allowed to see it, and I said that it was too good to see. Of course, I was curious, and when I hid in the quilt and watched "Dream of the Red Chamber", I thought: Maybe adults have peeked at it like this before.
"Dream of the Red Chamber" is actually a book for teenagers, it has become classical literature today, and many people think that it is a book read by the elderly. It has been adapted into movies and TV series, and the age of characters has also been increased, such as Wang Xifeng, sometimes played by actors in their forties. In the novel, Wang Xifeng was about seventeen years old at the beginning, Lin Daiyu should be about twelve years old when she entered Jia Province, Jia Baoyu was one year old, and Bao Chao was a little older, and they were all teenagers around the age of fifteen in the novel.
Therefore, the first thing I want to talk about is the age of the characters in "Dream of the Red Chamber". They are all teenagers. Think about it, what are the twelve-year-old girls and thirteen-year-old boys in our family doing? They are Lin Daiyu and Jia Baoyu in "Dream of the Red Chamber". If he was more than fifteen years old, he probably wouldn't stay like this, like Daiyu, who cried over there all day, got angry for no reason, and calculated that Baoyu was good to others, and felt that he was not good enough for her, this is the girlish feeling, the little girl's mood. Therefore, when reading "Dream of the Red Chamber", the first thing to do is to restore the characters to teenagers.
Jiang Xun is a famous writer, poet, painter and aesthetician. Born in Xi'an in 1947, he settled in Taipei in 1951 and studied at the Department of History of the Chinese Culture University, the Institute of Art of the Chinese Culture University and the University of Paris.
