World Autism Day: How to identify autism spectrum disorder early?

Tomorrow (2 April 2022) is the 15th World Autism Day. The Jiangsu Disabled Persons' Federation and the Jiangsu Provincial Child Rehabilitation Research Center jointly launched an initiative: Let us care for the children of the stars together, enter the spiritual world of autistic children, pass on love and warmth to them, and support them with a blue sky.

World Autism Day: How to identify autism spectrum disorder early?

Today (April 1st), let's take a look at how to identify autism spectrum disorder early.

Autism begins with neurodevelopmental disorders in early childhood, and there are currently no specific drugs, but the generally accepted strategies are early identification, early detection, and early intervention. Early intervention maximizes prognosis, so early identification is important. At present, the basic strategies for early clinical identification mainly include:

First, raise public awareness of autism disorders

The public, especially young parents, teachers, medical workers and other relevant personnel, must have an understanding of the behavioral manifestations of autism, and can find early indications with recognition value, such as not smiling at people at 3 months, no obvious interactive amusing at 6 months, no response to their own names at 12 months, will not identify facial features, will not use gestures such as "goodbye" to express, or at any age There is a regression in language, social skills, etc., which are high-risk clues. In short, when children lag behind in the development of emotional and social skills milestones, there are some unusual behaviors such as visual preferences, interest preferences, perceptual preferences, or special difficulties in raising, etc., they should be paid great attention to.

Second, do a good job of routine examination of children's health care

Compared with the early warning signs of children's psychobehavioral developmental disorders 0-6 years old, autism spectrum disorder will appear at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, 24 months, pediatricians, child health care doctors when routine examination, in any age milestone, found that any suspicious or positive entry, need to be referred for further evaluation and diagnosis, or when there is a very clear one-way direction, special screening for autism is required in order to intervene.

III. Establish follow-up mechanisms for high-risk groups

Follow-up monitoring of high-risk groups begins after birth or even during maternal pregnancy, because general neurodevelopmental disorders are accompanied by a high degree of comorbidities, and there are familial aggregation phenomena such as language delay, mental retardation, autism, hyperactivity, epilepsy and so on in many families. If there is already any type of neurodevelopmental defect in the family, the reborn child should be followed up and monitored after birth, and included in the observation population before the indications for abnormal behavior are detected, so as to maximize early detection.
