Welcome to Sophie's Dad Read. In the last issue, I introduced the awards of the 2022 International Hans Christian Andersen Awards. French writer Murall and Korean illustrator Susie Lee won the Writer's Prize and the Painter's Award, respectively. Last year, Susie Lee and Cao Wenxuan, a Winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Prize, joined forces to create and publish the picture book "Rain and Dew".
In addition to the winning authors, the International Hans Christian Andersen Prize has launched a list of excellent book recommendations: based on the works of authors nominated by various countries to participate in the Andersen Prize selection, 20 books are recommended at a time. Since 2018, this book list has been recommended every two years along with the Hans Christian Andersen Award, and three books have been published in three editions so far.
Chinese painter Zhu Chengliang's "Don't Let the Sun Fall" was selected for the 2020 recommended book list, and Xiong Liang's "Little Stone Lion" was selected for this year's recommended book list. Xiong Liang was shortlisted for the International Hans Christian Andersen Illustration Award in 2014 and was the first illustrator in China to be shortlisted for the final shortlist.
Today I will introduce you to the picture book "Little Stone Lion". In fact, "Little Stone Lion" has been published for many years. It is one of the series of picture books "Picture Book China", the first edition of which was published by Tomorrow Press in 2007.
"I am the stone lion of the town, and I am the patron saint of the town. Don't look at me as smaller than a cat, I'm older than the oldest man in town..."
"Little Stone Lion" is a self-narration of a carved stone lion in the town, which expresses thoughts about the hometown, tradition and modernity through simple stories and rich pictures.
As some readers commented, this is a "very warm book", there is a "faint nostalgia" in the book, not only for children, but also for young people, middle-aged people, and the elderly.
As a picture book, "Little Stone Lion" does not have many words, a total of only 173 words, which is a nostalgic story "drawn" with pictures. The author is very good at using the language of the lens, for example, when the first page of the little lion appears, behind the roof, turn over the "lens" to advance, the picture is a close-up of a lion face, and then turn over the lens to continue to advance, it is a cross-page lion face - feel that the stone lion is so big! But when you look at the page again, it's actually only the size of a palm— an old man is stroking its head with his hand, "smaller than a cat."
