Foreword: Chinese spade (hereinafter referred to as CUHK) is an introductory variety for many insect friends, with simple feeding, long life span, very large individuals, and simple feeding. However, today we do not want to introduce the medium and large, but want to talk about the miniaturized variety of large shovels: small shovels.
1, the advantages of small shovel
Life habits: In addition to the petite size of the spade, the spade as a whole has the advantages of similar to the spade, has good cold tolerance, and the long life span is usually 1 to 3 years, which is relatively simple for novices to feed both adults and larvae.
2. The number of spade varieties
There are a total of 23 species (including subspecies) in the country, which can be described as a large number, and there are nearly 20 varieties (including subspecies) in Southeast Asia, while Japan, where the spade breeding industry is developed, has only 2 varieties and 9 subspecies. Therefore, today we will first introduce the small shovels in Japan, and we will pick the future of other regions.
According to the domestic classification, the spade has been stripped from the genus knife spade and established the genus Knife Spade, which is named Falcicornis. The Latin scientific name of the Japanese spade introduced in the text still uses the genus Dorcus, and the Chinese name is also referred to as a spade.
3. Japanese shovels
There are two varieties of Japanese spades, the Japanese spade and the Amami spade, the former containing 5 subspecies, and the latter having 4 subspecies.
According to the Classification of the Japanese side, there are also Dorcus striatipennis (striped spades, a total of 4 subspecies, 2 in China and Japan) are also classified as small shovels, but according to the Chinese classification, this belongs to the genus of knife spades, Chinese double-toothed spades, this article is based on the domestic classification of the directly ignore this variety, but the follow-up will be introduced separately.

Note: In the domestic classification, the Japanese spade is also classified as the genus of knife shovels, and the Chinese is a single tooth spade.
Amami shovel
Okay, now let's talk about the Amami spade and the subspecies. They are commonly found in low altitude areas of 150 to 200 m on the Japanese outlying islands (islands other than Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu), and occur in early summer and at their peak in August. The spawning period in the wild is about January, and the larvae live in soft decaying wood with slightly higher humidity, and the larval stage is about 1 year.
Amami spade (Dorcus amamianus amamianus): Amami spade worm - Amami small mantle feeding and breeding - Amami small hammer life habits knowledge science - Roche worm society
Originally known as the subspecies, the habitat is Amami Oshima and Kajiruma Island, smaller than the Japanese spade, but the spade genus should have all the characteristics, the male large jaw is short and small, only a pair of inner teeth, the front chest angle is rounded, the body color is black to black brown. Female elytra have distinct vertical stripes (compared to totokushima and Okinawa subspecies).

Dorcus amamianus nomurai : Ryukyu spade worm - Okinawa spade breeding - Knowledge of Ryukyu spade life habits - Roche worm society
A subspecies distributed in the Amami Islands, also known as okinawan spades, has a very small jaw, even in large individuals, but the inner teeth are "stronger", the body is more slender, the body color is black and the luster is stronger. Female elytra have no distinct streaks.
Bekuwa breeding record: 39.2 mm
The subspecies name derives from the Japanese surname "Nomura".

Dorcus amamianus kubotai: Tokushima spade worm - Tokushima spade shell breeding - Tokushima spade habits knowledge science - Roche worm society
A subspecies located on tokushima, it is a bit brown in color. Compared with the original subspecies, the body is less carved and sparse, and the female elytra stripes are not obvious.
Bekuwa breeding record: 41.5 mm
The subspecies name derives from the Japanese Kubota Hirotoshi's surname "Kubota".

Yaeyama spade (Dorcus amamianus yaeyamaensis): Yaeyama spade -Nishimomojima spade mantle rearing and breeding -Yaeyama spade life habits knowledge science - Roche worm society
A subspecies located in Iriomote Island (the largest island in the Yaeyama Islands), the large jaw is thinner, the forethia is four-pointed, the body is relatively broad, the body color is dark reddish brown, and has a certain luster. Once known as the most prized variety of the Japanese spade, it has been recorded in recent years.
The subspecies name "yaeyama" means Yaeyama Islands.

Summary: The small shovel can be described as a small replica of the big shovel, although the sparrow is small and complete, the characteristics of the part are still there, and friends who like small spade armor can not miss it. In addition, the classification and attribution of small spade varieties between China and Japan are not small, but it does not matter, we just need to recognize these varieties, and it is good to know that Japan has two common small spade varieties of Japanese spades and Amami spades.
