Using ChatGPT to pay for content on white pages is about to fail.
Just yesterday, OpenAI announced that it has temporarily disabled ChatGPT's official web browsing mode.
Although the announcement is very cryptic, the main purpose of this feature removal is to urgently fix the vulnerability of "climbing over the paywall".
Corresponding prompts also appear in the interface of ChatGPT.
Some netizens mistakenly thought that they were going to be permanently removed, saying that they could not accept it, "it is worth paying if you can connect to the Internet."
After learning that it was only temporarily canceled, the excitement of netizens seemed to have calmed down somewhat, but they still looked forward to the early return of this function.
was exposed to "stealing" paid content
Previously, ChatGPT was exposed to be able to climb over the paywall to obtain hidden full text.
This is the second time that ChatGPT has involved copyright issues after it was revealed that ChatGPT used copyright content for training.
OpenAI did not explain the reason for this vulnerability.
However, paid content is protected differently by content owner.
Some of the content that can be read for a fee is loaded when the web page is opened, but it is hidden by technical means.
Normally browsers don't display these texts directly, but there are other ways to get them to appear even without ChatGPT.
ChatGPT reads web content in code, and this hiding method does not work in front of ChatGPT.
But when we looked at the front-end code, we found that the website mentioned in the exposure (now) did not load in this way.
If it is not for the content party to make an emergency update after discovering the leakage problem, it means that there are other reasons for ChatGPT to leak the vulnerability of paid content.
Although not explained much, OpenAI's suspension of ChatGPT's web browsing function is an urgent fix for this problem.
We also tested whether we could bypass this restriction with a history of chats with web views.
As a result, a prompt appears that "The legacy model used in this conversation is not available", and the answer directly states that he does not have web browsing capabilities.
However, some plugins with web browsing capabilities are still available, such as WebPilot.
In addition to OpenAI fixing this vulnerability, some owners of paid content have also put in place precautions.
For example, when we tried to use WebPilot to access paid Bloomberg articles, we were blocked by the security system.
For the first time, page views declined
According to Similarweb, ChatGPT traffic declined for the first time last month.
Page views and unique visitors decreased by 9.7% and 5.7% respectively month-on-month.
As can also be seen from the chart above, the growth rate of page views began to slow down in March, leveled off in May, and then declined this time.
The length of a single visit showed a downward trend in March, with the average length of each stay reduced by about one minute.
However, compared to other products, including Bing, ChatGPT's leading position in terms of views has not changed.
It should be noted that the above data only counts the number of visits to the web version.
The third party cannot make statistics on API call data.
Visits to the OpenAI developer platform increased by 3.9% from May, but still fell short of the 140 million visits recorded in March.
How long do you think ChatGPT will remain popular?
