Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip met for the first time officially at Dartmouth Naval Academy on July 22, 1939, when she was still Princess Elizabeth.
Philip, 18, was responsible for entertaining his 13-year-old cousin and her 9-year-old sister, Princess Margaret, while the king and queen were on duty at the academy.
Over the next seven years, Philip and Elizabeth grew closer, joining the British Navy and spending weekends at Windsor Castle on vacation.
The lovers exchanged letters and were secretly engaged in 1946. Because the George VI couple thought she was too young at the time, it was not until July 1947 that the engagement was publicly announced, and the two married on November 20.
