(Announcement on preventing the introduction of monkeypox epidemic to the mainland)
Since May 2022, monkeypox outbreaks have continued to be widespread in multiple regions around the world, with more than 89 000 confirmed cases of monkeypox reported from 113 countries to date, including 152 deaths. Recently, monkeypox outbreaks have been on the rise in Europe, the Americas and the Western Pacific Region. In order to prevent the monkeypox epidemic from entering the mainland and protect the health and safety of people entering and leaving the country, in accordance with the Law of the People's Republic of China on Border Health and Quarantine and its implementation rules and other laws and regulations, the following announcement is hereby issued:
1. Persons from countries (regions) where monkeypox outbreaks occur, if they have been exposed to monkeypox cases or have symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, lethargy, fatigue, back pain, myalgia, swollen lymph nodes, and extensive rashes on the face and body, should take the initiative to declare to the customs when entering the country, and the customs health quarantine personnel will take medical measures and carry out sampling and testing in accordance with the prescribed procedures.
2. Aircraft, ships, containers and cargo from countries (regions) where monkeypox outbreaks occur that are contaminated or may be contaminated shall be subject to sanitary treatment in accordance with prescribed procedures.
This announcement shall take effect from the date of publication and shall be valid for 6 months.

Monkeypox outbreak surveillance in July 2023
According to data previously released by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, from July 1 to 31, 2023, 491 new confirmed cases of monkeypox were reported in 23 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) in Chinese mainland (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), including 115 cases reported in Guangdong, 81 cases reported in Beijing, 49 cases reported in Sichuan, 40 cases reported in Zhejiang, 33 cases reported in Hunan, 31 cases reported in Jiangsu, 25 cases reported in Shanghai, 19 cases reported in Anhui, 17 cases reported in Tianjin, 17 cases reported in Hubei, 14 cases reported in Henan, 12 cases reported in Liaoning, Shandong reported 12 cases, Jilin reported 9 cases, Yunnan reported 4 cases, Shaanxi reported 4 cases, Fujian reported 2 cases, Chongqing reported 2 cases, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, Guizhou and Qinghai 1 case each, with no severe cases or deaths.
According to the epidemiological investigation and analysis, the epidemic presents the following characteristics: First, the cases are all male, and 96.3% of the cases are clearly men who have sex with men. Second, the risk of transmission by other contact methods is low. None of the close contacts other than same-sex sexual contact became infected. Third, 89.2% of the cases were found by active medical visits, 6.5% were found by close contact tracing and screening, and the rest were found by active reporting and active screening. Fourth, the clinical manifestations of most cases are typical, mainly fever, herpes, lymphadenopathy and other symptoms, and there are no severe and death cases.
