However, a catastrophe that began in the mid-1960s shattered his beautiful dreams and brought him ruin.
As mentioned earlier, Zheng Junli had acted in a drama with Lan Ping in the early 30s and was familiar with Lan Ping's activities and performance in Shanghai. And at that time, their relationship was also relatively good, even Lan Ping suddenly disappeared in Shanghai for 3 weeks (it is said that Lan Ping was arrested and imprisoned), and Lan Ping and Zheng Junli said why they disappeared such privacy. That is to say, Zheng Junli had evidence against Lan Ping.

The change in their relationship began with the Cultural Revolution, when Zhang Chunqiao, then secretary of the Shanghai Municipal CPC Committee, talked to Zheng Junli and asked him to take out the letters and photos of the chief in his hand and hand them over to the chief himself. Zheng Junli handed in the letters and photos that Lan Ping had written to him after he left Shanghai.
In the early morning of October 9, 1966, Zheng Junli, Zhao Dan, and Gu were raided. The raiders specifically searched for letters, diaries, manuscripts, and photographs. Later in the Cultural Revolution, it was learned that Lan Ping was searching for a letter related to her privacy.
In November 1967, Zheng Junli, Zhao Dan, and Gu Were arrested and imprisoned on charges of "secret agent, traitor, counter-revolutionary, and representative of the black line." In prison, he was tortured and inhumanly tortured. Zheng Junli suffered from liver disease in prison and died in prison on April 23, 1969, at the age of 58, due to long-term prison torture.
