The ChatGPT version of the micro phone is here! AI Pin calls, recording, taking photos, and answering questions
Previously, the artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can replace smartphones was officially unveiled. There are comments that the wearable will test consumers' interest in AI and the potential of the future of post-smartphones.
On Thursday, November 9, Humane, a startup founded by former Apple designers Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, released AI hardware called AI Pin, which will be available for pre-order starting next Thursday, November 16 and shipping early next year. As with previous media news, the entire system of AI Pin, including data cables, adapters, battery packs, battery boxes, etc., starts at $699, and there is a monthly subscription fee of $24.
According to Humane's comprehensive subscription plan, the $24 per month billed for $24 includes a dedicated phone number and unlimited airtime, data coverage on the T-Mobile network, texts, cloud storage, and more. Humane also launched Ai Bus, a new operating system for wearables.
As previously mentioned by Wall Street, AI Pin is a miniature device that can be attached to clothes, without a screen, and has a built-in OpenAI's GPT series of large models, which can interact with voice or projection on the palm of your hand.
In Humane's demo, one of the novelties of the AI Pin is that through the laser projection system, it can display information directly on the user's palm, eliminating the need for a screen. It is equipped with a depth sensor that allows users to interact with menus through gestures, such as providing the appropriate text or changing songs. As long as the user tilts their palms in different directions, they can highlight the options of the menu, and close their palms to return to the home page.
The AI Pin consists of two parts: a square device, and a battery pack that can be magnetically attached to clothing or other surfaces. The prismatic device weighs about 36 grams, and the battery pack weighs 20 grams. It is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor and has a built-in camera that can take 13 megapixel photos, and after a software update, it can shoot video in the future.
The AI Pin does not always listen for external sounds by default, nor does it have a wake word like "Hey Siri", which the user must manually activate by tapping and dragging the touchpad. While recording, a "Trust Light" on the top of the AI Pin flashes, alerting users and others that the AI Pin is collecting data.
The most important feature of the AI Pin is that it connects to the AI model through software called AI Mic. Previous reports mentioned that it is mainly supported by GPT-4.
Humane on Thursday mentioned Microsoft and OpenAI as among the vendors that support AI Pin, noting that access to ChatGPT is actually one of the core features of AI Pin. The AI Pin runs an operating system called Cosmos, which will automatically direct the user's query to the appropriate tool, rather than requiring the user to download and manage the app.
It has been previously revealed by the media that the AI-powered AI Pin can perform tasks such as writing documents, organizing emails, translating in real time, identifying food and providing nutritional information, and also supports Tidal music streaming, in which the "AI DJ" will select music according to the environment, and even has an "AI-centric photography function".
This Thursday, Humane showed off some of the AI Pin's AI-powered features, and there are not many surprises compared to the aforementioned features that have been exposed. Humane also showcased the AI Pin's accessories, such as a clip, case, and battery case that can be recharged with USB.
The media pointed out that the main use of AI Pin appears to be a wearable search engine powered by a large language model (LLM). Humane also revealed to the media on Thursday that it intends to add navigation and shopping features, and plans to give developers a way to build their own tools.
