Japan's latest trends are attracting international attention!

This morning, the topic # Japan intends to extend the continental shelf by 120,000 square kilometers # rushed to Baidu hot search, according to reference news citing Japan's "Yomiuri Shimbun" report, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced that most of the "Ogasawara Sea Platform Sea" located east of Chichijima Island in the Ogasawara Islands will be designated as the Japanese continental shelf, with a total area of about 120,000 square kilometers. It is said that there are rare metals on the seabed of the sea area.

At the same time, the Red Sea crisis is still spreading. On December 23, local time, Iran warned that "the Mediterranean Sea may be blocked". It is understood that the Mediterranean Sea occupies an important position both in terms of transportation and strategy. It can pass the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar in the west, connect the Black Sea through the Turkish Strait in the northeast, and reach the Indian Ocean through the Red Sea through the Suez Canal in the southeast.

In addition, the news of the arrest of two executives of vivo India has also attracted attention. A Vivo spokesperson said it was "deeply alarmed", saying that the Indian authorities' "recent arrests show that harassment continues, creating uncertainty for the industry as a whole."

Japan intends to extend its continental shelf by 120,000 square kilometers

Japan's "Yomiuri Shimbun" reported on December 23 that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced at the meeting of the "Comprehensive Marine Policy Headquarters" in person on the 22nd that most of the "Ogasawara Sea Terrace" east of Chichijima Island in the Ogasawara Islands will be designated as Japan's continental shelf, with a total area of about 120,000 square kilometers. It is said that there are rare metals on the seabed in this area, and Japan will be able to exploit resources there.

Kishida said that coordination with the United States has progressed, and that "domestic procedures will be completed as soon as possible to include the relevant areas in Japan's extended continental shelf." The Japanese government will proceed to revise the relevant regulations.

According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the seabed and subsurface of an exclusive economic zone not exceeding 200 nautical miles from the coast are continental shelves, which can extend up to 350 nautical miles if certain conditions are met. A country has priority over its continental shelf, for example, in the exploitation of resources.

In 2012, the United Nations Commission approved Japan's extension of the continental shelf, and it took about 10 years for the Japanese government to coordinate with the United States to make progress. However, negotiations on some areas of the Ogasawara Sea Terrace have not yet been reached, and Japan will continue to consult with the United States.

Iran warns: The Mediterranean Sea could be blocked

On December 23, local time, according to Iran's Tasnim News Agency, a commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on the same day that if the United States and its allies continue to commit crimes in the Gaza Strip, it may prompt the emergence of new resistance forces. He said that "the Mediterranean, the Strait of Gibraltar and other waterways" could be closed.

On the same day, Iranian Foreign Minister Abdollahian held a press conference on the sidelines of the International Conference on the Question of Palestine. Abdollahian denied claims that Iran was "deeply involved" in the planning of the Red Sea merchant ship attack and that Iranian intelligence played a key role in the Houthi attack in Yemen.

"We frankly told the US side that they [the Houthi rebels] made decisions based on their own position, and we never ordered them to do anything, and we will not order them to stop their actions," Abdollahian said. Abdollahian also said that after the United States issued a statement that it was forming a multinational force led by the United States to ensure the safety of ships shipping in the Red Sea, Iran did not believe that this was the right thing to do to seek peace.

Since mid-November, the Houthis have been carrying out attacks on "Israeli-linked vessels" in the Red Sea. A number of container shipping companies have announced the suspension of their container ships in the Red Sea and nearby waters. According to the data provided by the German logistics company Dexun, as of the morning of the 20th, 121 container ships have abandoned entering the Red Sea and the Suez Canal and chose to circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope in Africa, resulting in an increase of about 6,000 nautical miles in their voyage and a possible extension of 1 to 2 weeks. The company expects more vessels to join the detour route in the future. And after numerous ships circumnavigated the Cape of Good Hope, maritime traffic in the Red Sea fell by 30% year-on-year. In addition, due to the attack on merchant ships in the Red Sea waters, the business volume of the Israeli port of Eilat fell by about 85%.

According to CCTV News, the tense situation in the Red Sea has brought chaos to the global shipping industry, and the Japanese shipping giant also announced a detour on the 20th. On the same day, the container shipping company, a joint venture between Japan's three shipping giants, announced that it had suspended sailing from the Red Sea and instead detoured to the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa. Many market investors believe that the tightening situation in the Red Sea will lead to an increase in shipping costs, so the stock prices of related companies have risen sharply in recent days. As of the 21st, Japan's shipping sector rose for five consecutive trading days. The stock prices of Japan's three major shipping companies have all risen to varying degrees, and one of them has hit a new high since its listing. On the 22nd, the shipping sector continued to rise.

Hoffman, head of the Trade Logistics Branch of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, warned on the 19th that the disruption of the Suez Canal to the Red Sea route will increase shipping costs and eventually lead to higher consumer prices. Hoffman mentioned that container freight rates have increased significantly.

The Suez Canal to the Red Sea is one of the busiest waterways in the world, connecting the Red Sea with the Mediterranean.

Two executives of vivo India were arrested

India's anti-financial crime agency has arrested two senior employees working for the Indian branch of Chinese smartphone maker Vivo, according to a source directly involved in the case. The identity of the Vivo India employees could not be confirmed at this time, and they will appear in court on December 26. According to other sources, the detained employees include the interim CEO and CFO of vivo India.

A Vivo spokesperson said it was "deeply alarmed" by the arrests by the Indian authorities, saying that the "recent arrests show that harassment continues and creates uncertainty for the entire industry" and that the company will resolutely use all legal means to address and challenge the allegations.

In October, India's financial law enforcement agency arrested four industry executives, including an employee of Vivo, on suspicion of money laundering. At that time, vivo responded that the company strictly abides by local laws and regulations in India. "We are closely monitoring the recent investigation and will take all feasible legal steps to respond to it. ”

Since the end of 2021, the Indian authorities have carried out several raids and tax inspections on Chinese mobile phone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, vivo, and OPPO, and froze and seized the funds in the accounts of the above-mentioned companies in India for various reasons. According to Jiemian News, Yang Shucheng, secretary general of the China-India-Vietnam Electronics Association (CMA), once said, "It is not a random inspection but a general survey for Chinese enterprises, and the law enforcement is quite strict." In addition to checking the company itself, it will also trace upstream and downstream and affiliated companies, which is a 'treatment' that no other country has."

In response to India's investigation of Chinese companies such as Xiaomi and vivo, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Chinese government has always required Chinese companies to operate in accordance with laws and regulations overseas, and at the same time, we firmly support Chinese companies in safeguarding their legitimate rights and interests, and that India should act in accordance with laws and regulations to provide a fair, just and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies to invest and operate in India.
