When it comes to BMW M5, what adjectives come to mind first? V8？ Violent gentleman? Low profile? BMW has just officially released a new generation of G90 M5, its characteristics and first impression are completely different, let's take a look at this latest M Power!
The powerful plug-in hybrid V8 can also go out with pure electricity
The all-new G90 M5 is equipped with a plug-in hybrid 4.4T V8 (S68) powertrain, with a combined maximum output of 727hp (5600~6500rpm) and a peak torque of 1000Nm (1800~5400rpm), mated to an 8-speed M Steptronic gearbox and M xDrive all-wheel drive system (pure rear-wheel drive), which accelerates from 0 to 96 km/h in 3.4 seconds.
The S68B44T0 has an internal combustion engine with an output of 577 hp and 750 Nm, an electric motor in the gearbox that produces 194 hp and 280 Nm, and a battery capacity of 18.6 kWh (14.8 kWh for the US version), which takes 3 hours and 15 minutes to fully charge from 0 to 100% with 7.4 kW AC. The WLTP has an all-electric range of about 70 kilometers and a maximum electric speed of 140 km/h.
This set of power is stronger than the standard BMW XM, but also significantly more than the current F90, and can provide pure electric driving mode, can also be on the green card? When you sneak out/go home, you're no longer afraid to wake up your neighbors, it's still amazing to think about.
The body size of the new generation G90 M5 is 5096/1970/1510mm, the wheelbase is 3006mm, and its EU curb weight is 2435kg, which is more than the current F90 M5 (1960kg) and i5 M60 (2305kg). I have to say that if this weight is not matched with a strong enough power and transmission system, it will really collapse, but even so, BMW can still achieve a weight distribution close to 50:50.
The M Hybrid system has a variety of driving modes:
- HYBRID (default): internal combustion engine + electric motor drive. In Comfort mode, the motor is used more frequently; In Sport and Sport Plus modes, the internal combustion engine is always on; If the battery is low, the system will automatically charge the battery.
- ELECTRIC: Motor-driven, the engine is only activated when downshifting or in manual mode.
- eCONTROL: Charge the battery by means of energy recovery or by means of an internal combustion engine.
- DYNAMIC: internal combustion engine + electric motor. Balanced, consistent performance for track driving.
- DYNAMIC PLUS: The full power of the internal combustion engine + electric motor for short-lived, ultra-high-strength performance on the track.
The all-new M5 is also equipped with the latest M Servotronic steering system, which provides the right amount of steering torque with the help of an electric motor. The integrated active steering system and adaptive M suspension are also standard, resulting in a 1.5° steering angle to the rear wheels, improving vehicle comfort and reducing the turning radius.
The appearance is more impactful
When I saw the exterior design of the new generation M5, my first impression was that the wide-body effect was obvious, and it looked more solid than the ordinary 5 Series or i5 M60. The kidney grille is also illuminated, with the exclusive logo of "M5" on the inside; The lower envelope air intake is mainly concentrated in the middle, and the shape of the front lip is the same as that of the new generation X3, like a big mouth to devour everything.
The side shape is also quite muscular, especially in the rear wheel position, which has been consistent with the M3 design style, the line processing is very direct, and there is an exclusive logo at the C-pillar position, which seems to be unable to shine? At the left front fender is the charging port. The all-new M5 is equipped with Type 951 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, 285/40 ZR20 and 295/35 ZR21 tyres, and optional carbon-ceramic brakes.
Looking at the rear design, the first is the small carbon fiber rear wing above, which is the iconic design of the M Power model; The taillights are no different from the regular 5 Series; The focus is on the lower surrounding, and the position of the reflective strips on both sides will make the vehicle appear wider, which is a bit like X5M/X6M; The large area of high-gloss black trim is more aerodynamic than before, and the attributes of the "diffuser" are sufficient, so does it feel a bit "thong"?
The interior is both performance and smart
The overall interior design language of the new M5 is largely the same as that of the 5 Series, but there are many performance improvements in the details, such as a large area of carbon fiber trim throughout the car, a new flat-bottomed steering wheel with three-tone stitching and a red return mark at 12 o'clock, and of course, the red M1/M2 buttons are extremely conspicuous.
Judging from the central control position, oh ~ or small lever brothers! The red start button is conspicuous, the iDrive knob also has the exclusive logo of "M", and below it are the buttons for MYMODE, SETUP, M HYBRID, and DSC adjustment.
The seats of the new M5 are a new two-piece design, and as a four-door sedan, the rear row can naturally be taken into account for family use. With 18 speakers and 655 watts of power, the Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system sounds like a treat too.
The all-new BMW M5 will make its world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK in July 2024, and production will begin at the BMW Group's Dingolfing plant in the same month, with MSRP starting at $119,500 in the United States. This new M Power may be unveiled in China at this year's Chengdu Auto Show, look forward to it!
