It is reported that the Houzimen 220 thousand volt substation is a key project of Chengdu Power Grid in the peak summer in 2024, and it is also the first 220 thousand volt substation put into operation in the third ring road of Chengdu in 11 years. The substation is located on the northeast side of Chengdu Tianfu Square, west of the Ming Shu Wangfu ruins, covering an area of 4,408 square meters, saving about 50% of the land area compared with conventional substations of the same scale. The substation has 3 new main transformers, with a total capacity of 720,000 kVA, 2 220 kV outlets, 12 110 kV outlets, and 24 10 kV outlets.

The reporter learned that the load density in the central urban area of Chengdu is high, and with the rapid economic and social development, there are three 220 thousand volt substations with a total capacity of 960,000 kVA in the second ring road, and the maximum load rate has been close to 100%. The core area of the city urgently needs a 220 thousand volt substation as a load, voltage support, the idea of building a 220 thousand volt underground substation near Tianfu Square came into being in the 90s of the last century, and the relevant departments jointly carried out planning demonstration.

From the idea to the implementation of the plan and the conditions for starting construction, the Houzimen underground substation has gone through more than 20 years, and then experienced a twist and turn in the construction process. The project was originally planned to enter construction in December 2016, but the project was suspended due to the unified planning of "Chengdu Center". After the restart, due to the excavation of the site and the discovery of cultural relics, the cultural relics protection department intervened to carry out the rescue excavation of underground cultural relics, and the start time was changed to December 2017. Later, due to the major discovery of the ruins of the Ming Shu Wangfu in the excavation of cultural relics, more time was needed to carry out the rescue protection of cultural relics, and the construction of the project was postponed again. In December 2019, phased progress was made in the protection of cultural relics, and the construction of the substation officially started.

The substation adopts the country's first "power grid construction + cultural relics protection" model. The area around the site has important historical relics such as the Shu County Government Office of the Han Dynasty, the Maha Pond of the Sui (Tang and Song Dynasty), the Xuanhua Garden of the Five Dynasties, the Shu Wangfu of the Ming Dynasty, and the Gongyuan of the Qing Dynasty, which is the witness of the glorious history of the Qin and Han dynasties and the Tang and Song dynasties. The project builder and the cultural relics protection department worked together to relocate the cultural relics protection of the palace wall site of the Ming Shu Dynasty during the construction of the substation. After the substation is completed and put into operation, the site will be relocated to the underground substation as a whole, forming a unique scene of organic integration and complementarity between modern power culture and ancient Shu civilization relics.

The construction of the project has been highly valued and strongly supported by party committees and governments at all levels. From the demonstration more than 30 years ago, to the planning and landing, and then to the completion and operation, the main leaders of the Chengdu Municipal Government have held more than 30 special meetings, and the Chengdu Municipal Development and Reform Commission, the Economic and Information Bureau, the Cultural Relics Bureau and other departments have held more than 300 coordination meetings to find ways to solve the problems encountered in the process of project planning and construction, especially the State Grid Chengdu Power Supply Company and the Chengdu Municipal Cultural Relics Bureau under the overall planning of the Chengdu Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, efficient coordination and cooperation, and innovative use of the "power grid construction + cultural relics protection" model. In the end, it will achieve a win-win situation of ensuring the operation of the city and continuing the memory of ancient Shu.

The construction of the substation not only takes into account the protection of cultural relics, but also a series of technological innovations. "In order to overcome the groundwater buoyancy brought about by the special geographical environment of the Chengdu Plain, we laid 471 anti-floating piles to firmly fix the entire substation underground, and used a new process to lift a single main transformer weighing 200 tons to a depth of 18.7 meters underground, and selected smaller indoor combined electrical appliances." Xia Yuhang, project manager of the project management center of State Grid Chengdu Power Supply Company, said that the surrounding electricity demand is strong, and 15 10 thousand volt lines are in full swing to be connected, and they will play a role when they are put into operation.

After the substation is put into operation, it will provide 720,000 kilowatts of power support for important commercial and living areas such as Chunxi Road, IFS, Kuanzhai Alley, and Wenshufang in the second ring road of Chengdu, not only improving the power supply capacity of the central urban area by 75%, but also upgrading the original 110 kV series supply line to two 220 kV substations with one main and one standby power supply mode, providing reliable and sufficient energy guarantee for Chengdu International Financial Highland, high-end business portal, Tianfu Cultural Center and other urban core areas.

It is reported that the State Grid Chengdu Power Supply Company is going all out to make preparations for the summer power supply, and accelerate the promotion of the Sichuan Shiling 500 thousand volt power transmission and transformation project and its supporting projects, Chengdu Power Grid Grid side structure network SVG, 220 thousand volt Taoxiang-Rongdong line project, Huangzhong Avenue 220 thousand volt power transmission and transformation project and other 17 key projects in the peak summer are put into operation to ensure that the Chengdu power grid achieves a safe carrying capacity of more than 20.4 million kilowatts before the peak summer.
