A truck reportedly failed to stop at an intersection and crashed into a school in south Sydney after slamming into multiple cars.
A shocking crash occurred when a truck crashed past 19 cars and crashed into a classroom at a Catholic school in Sydney's south-west.
St Joseph Catholic Church and School in Moorebank is packed with students and parishioners seven days a week – just around 1pm on Saturday, a delivery truck burst out of Newbridge Rd, through a fence, then into a parking lot and crashed into a classroom.
The parish priest said that not so long ago, the church was holding a baptismal service, which was attended by many people.
Shaun Colls, acting police officer of the Liverpool City Police Department's district command, said it was incredible that no one was seriously injured in the crash, which involved more than a dozen people.
"Considering the number of vehicles involved and the extent of the damage to all of them, I thought it would be much more serious than minor injuries, which is so shocking," said Officer Colls. And that also includes the driver himself - what a blessing for the day, no one was seriously injured. ”
It is reported that three people are being treated in the hospital for minor injuries, while others are being evaluated by paramedics at the scene.
Police understand that the southbound truck turned against oncoming traffic before crashing through the fence, sliding through the parking lot and crashing into the building.
"Thank God, it's a real miracle that the parking lot was full earlier," said Fr. Chris De Sousa. It happened to happen that a few people went into the church to pray, and thankfully, it wasn't school opening week, it wasn't during student classes, it wasn't during Mass – we often had people come here to pray. ”
The condition of the building outside the classroom requires a full structural assessment.
This school has about 400 elementary school students.
The shocking footage showed trucks crashing into classrooms, surrounded by desks and student work, with a wooden beam nearly hitting the driver's head.
The driver was trapped for a short time, and police said it was unclear what had happened before the shocking crash.
Police Colls called on the driver who was present at the time to review the surveillance footage at the time of the incident and get in touch with the local police.
